What would you use a fixed 12X power scope for?

That would be a good choice, However I use variables the lower power settings "for me" get more hits just beacuse the target looks smaller and I don't tend to wave as much.

"D", a 12X would be an excellant scope on a prariedog rifle. I use a 12 power Leupold on one of my varmint rigs, and I am very pleased with it. More power is nice, but my eyes are still young enough that 10-12 power works fine for me. You "wave" the same if you are shooting at 32X or just using irons sights.

a 12x is also used often in benchrest shooting. i would suggest using a variable. on sunny days you may experience a "mirage" effect and you will be unable to correct it with a fixed 12x. using a variable, you can lower the power correcting the mirage effect.

A 12X would be an excellent scope for a 200 meter offhand Schuetzen rifle.

    Silhouette.
Most folk prefer a fixed power scope because there's no difference in how the reticle looks at different ranges, and in silo shooting; the more of that itty bitty pig you can see, the better you can pick your topple shot!
Also be good for long range sniping, prairie poodles, looking down the block at yer neighbors' 18-yr old, any application that demands a clear picture far away.

Good choice for smaller critters, and shots past 250 yds.

Needs to have (most do) an Adjustable Objective (AO).

If you see mirage (different than distorted sight picture-common with lower end scopes).....be thankful.

By it's defination alone, scopes don't cause mirage, or fix mirage.
First learn the causes. Then you can learn the solutions to shooting around it, thru it, and how to fix it.

What you can't see, can effect accuracy.

    Happy Bullet Holes!
