Feeding a S & W Model 1917
I understand that the S & W U.S. Army Model 1917 in a .45 caliber was used to supplement the 1911 semi-auto. It simply utilized the half moon clips to fire the acp cartridge. In the abscence of the half moon clips, what other ammo will function as a stand alone? Your assistance is always appreciated.

The only ammunition that I am aware of that will function in an S&W M1917 in place of the .45 ACP is the old .45 Auto Rim, which is pretty much a rimmed version of the .45 ACP with a lead bullet in place of the FMJ for commercial loadings. I understand that there was also a military loading in .45 Auto Rim with a FMJ bullet to comply with the Hague Convention and allow issue to our military. I have no idea if this ammo is even loaded today by any of our manufacturers. You can fire .45 ACP in your S&W, but you'll have to push/pry out the empty cases. Just use the clips as they are much easier to deal with.

Remington still loads the .45 auto rim with 230 grain lead bullets and also makes the empty brass available as a reloading component. 0 -
Full moon clips are also an option and are more readily available than half moon clips. Using the full moon clips will make the common .45 ACP ammo much more affordable to shoot than .45 Auto Rim.

There are also third moon clips.
They hold 2 rounds and you can install them and put them right back in the styrofoam blocks in some ammo boxes, ready to use. The spacing is the same.
I think I got all three styles from Ranch Products in Malinta, Ohio.0 -
