yugo sks stock cleaning\refinish
What is the best way to make my stock (Yugo SKS) look good. It is all greasy to the touch and i think it could look alot better. I want to clean and make it look better. Should i sand it and stain it or is there some simple cleaner i can use to clean it and make it look better. I dont care about making the value of the gun any less casue i plane to have it for the rest of my life. I have seen some pics of sks stocks that turned out pretty nice looking for what they were. Please rplay with some tips or suggestions..

I've never done an SKS, but here a few things I have used for cleaning/refinishing military stocks:
Start with the least invasive procedure first. If it is really just grease on the stock, Simple Green might remove it. Acetone (used outdoors with rubber gloves) would be my next step if that failed. If you then decide you need to refinish, use furniture stripper; never use sandpaper. Since the stock is probably light colored hardwood, you may need to stain it; use an oil based stain such as Fiebings or Brownell's to get the color you like. Refinish with tung oil, boiled linseed oil, Casey's, or any of a dozen good stock finishes available; rub with 0000 steel wool between coats.

nmeyers-what problems are involved with sandpapering? 0 -
Sandpaper removes too much wood. For collectible firearms, it removes the top level of stock markings, making them less visible. It also changes the contour of the stock, and leaves a smooth surface that is often different from the "open grain" surface many military guns have.
Since b-buck has already told us his SKS is a "shooter", all of that doesn't matter. However, sandpaper destroys the original finish, and takes us from the level of "cleaning" to that of "refinishing"; you can't ever go back to the original finish. Once sanded, the stock must be stained, sealed, and completely refinished.
