Looking at .223 rifles, How does the HK rate vs the AR or its many knock offs? 0 -
Depends on what you want to do. The HK is a nice rifle. I wouldn't mind owning one though I have a few dislikes about it.
1. That thumbhole stock is not really all that comfortable to hold.
2. They make a Full Capacity magwell adapter for it but it costs $350+.
Other than those 2 things it's a nice Rifle. There is a place that advertises in Shotgun News that has the magwell converters to allow it to take AR mags. They also have a blackout kit that allows you to paint the rifle black. I think a pistol grip is availble too. But all those fun things are pricey.
I expect that they will go up in value being made in Germany but have heard a rumor that HK is going to start a factory in the US to build these rifles as a way of getting around the import ban.

I have both, so I feel qualified to offer some input -
With the AR, mil-spec parts are common and easy to find should you ever need anything, factory and aftermarket upgrades are readily avaiable for everything from triggers, stocks, sights, furniture ... hummm, where to stop? Manufacturers abound and interchangable uppers for different caliburs and configurations are easily installed ... yada yada yada ... the AR is the most versitle weapon around ... unless you consider the 10-22 [:)]
Compare the SL8 - Which is roughly 1/3 more costly, its accurate but has a heavy non-adjustable trigger and is really only available in one configuration ... spare parts are nearly non-existant (except by special order) and the few factory accessories which are available for it are quite expensive, even the factory 10 round mags can be scarce at $40-$50 bucks a pop. The aftermarket (Special Weapons) mag-well and pistol grip conversion parts which drobs speaks of are now only available as a set and priced around $650 last time I checked ... those parts alone are roughly the cost of some complete AR type rifles.
If I could only have one, I'd go with the AR style weapon, hands down - without a question.

Thanx for input!!! I did wind up going with the SL8. After much thought I deceided that I just cant stand the cleanup involved with the AR's 0 -

Cleaning AR's is a pain.
