Cleaning Rem. 572
I found a .22 Remington pump at a yard sale that apparently has never been cleaned. I'm not sure what, if anything, I should disassemble to clean it. Taking it to a gunsmith would negate the bargain price. Any advice on how to get the crud out of the chamber and action would be appreciated.

The Remington M572 can be cleaned easily by removing the trigger assembly and barrel. When the barrel comes off, the bolt will come out with it. Just use oridinary solvent and clean everything, then oil and reassemble. It will probably work just fine the way it is if you just want to leave it alone. I have seen them left in a barn for decades and never be cleaned and they still work. 0 -
Judge Colt - please forgive my mechanical incompetence and ignorance -how does one remove the trigger group and barrel? More often than not when I disassemble something I have to pay someone to reassemble it.

I believe it was Rockefeller who said when asked how much it cost to operate a yacht, if you have to ask, you cannot afford it. If you have to ask how to disassemble the M572, perhaps you cannot do it, although it is very simple.
Look at the lower sides of the receiver and notice the two pins, one larger than the other. Drive those out from either side. Then wiggle the trigger group out for cleaning. No further disassembly of the tigger group is needed to clean it well enough. (You could soak the whole trigger assembly in solvent if you want. Gasoline, while dangerous, will work fine if you want to use it.)
Remove the magazine inner tube as if to load the rifle, then look at the underside of the receiver toward the front. There you will see a large screw, which is what holds the barrel in. Remove it and wiggle the barrel out forward. It will bring the bolt out with it. You can then disengage the bolt from the slide arm and clean it, paying particular attention to the extractor to be sure it is free. That will also expose the rear of the barrel for cleaning. If there is "crud," which I assume to be powder fouling, you can soak the chamber area in solvent for a day or two until the fouling is softened and can be easily removed. I would suggest running a patch through the magazine tube to clean it. Use a larger caliber bore brush on the inside of the magazine tube if necessary.
Clean the inside of the receiver cavity and you are done well enough. Oil and assemble in reverse order and enjoy your bargain.
