A friend of mine is in the market for a varmit rifle. He was leaning toward a Howa 22-250 and actually purchased one but Howa had some stock problems and 5 months later has cancelled his order and gotten a refund. He has gotten advice that a custom 223 single shot is the way to go. He would prefer a bolt rifle with a magazine or a semi auto. He is left handed. Price within reason ( $2500.00 or less ) is no problem. He has already purchased a leupold scope so don't take a scope into the price mix. Any suggestions I can forward to him will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance as you guys always give expert advice. 0 -
Tikka or Savage in my opinion. Both great values and excellent accuracy. go with the 22-250 though. I have a .223 and at times wish I had a little more shooting power for longer shots. 0 -
If the man has $2500 available why is he even thinking about a Howa? Forget the Tikka and the Savage, lets spend some money here! Take a look at the Cooper Arms Model 21 Varminter Extreme if he is really interested in something in .223 Remington. Another fine choice would be a varmint rifle from Dakota Arms- great quality. Although best known for their big fifty calibers and sniper rifles, Harris Gunworks makes an outstanding rifle called the Signature Varminter in a wide range of calibers. The McMillian Varmint rifles have an excellent reputation with very serious shooters and can just squeeze in under the budget. The Arnold Arms Company made outstanding rifles but I understand that they may be out of business? There are quite a few other rifles from top quality manufacturers out there, but this should get you started.

if he is interested in a single shot rifle, the ruger #1v in 22-250 in my opinion is the only choice. bolt actions are another story. the above mentioned tikka, (tikka continental in 22-250), is an excellent weapon. it is my opinion that if he purchases a .223 and gets hooked on the sport, he will want more range and soon be looking for a 22-250. savage has come a long way in offering a great rifle at a competitive price. i am partial to remington and highly promote the 6mm rem[:p] there are lots of guys that can offer a great deal of insight in this forum regarding varmint rifles. mine happens to be the 6 mill...[;)] 0 -

In my opinion i would build one kick ass ar-15 varminter. I have two and they are very damn accurate. It doesnt sound like he has a money problem so build 2 of them.[:D] 0 -

You might want to look into a custom built rifle in 22-250

If he has $2500, then tell him to go buy a Nesika Bay action, have it barreled with a Hart or Lilja barrel, a jewell trigger and appropriate stock. $2500 without the scope,.......custom all the way. forget production rifles.[:p][8]
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
