22 supershot

I have just inherited a double action 22 cal pistol. It has 22 supershot marked on the barrel and a serial number on the receiver somewhere in the 4000 range or so.. These are the only two markings on the fire arm. Through browsing around I found that Iver Johnson Seems to of made this gun, ( I THINK) . Can anyone help me out. I would love to find the guns true story of when it was made, how much it is worth or anything about the pistol at all. I have no intentions of selling the gun I am just very curious.. I would appreciate your responce.

  According to my book Iver Johnson made (2) "Supershot" .22 cal. revolvers.
  
  1), "Supershot Sealed 8" from 1919 to 1957. This had a 8 shot cylinder and a 6" barrel. Blued with a rubber grip.
  
  
  2), "Supershot 9" Similar except made with a 9 shot cylinder. Circa 1929 to 1949.
  
  Has your revolver been refinished? (buffed). Believe it should have the I J name and serial # on it someplace?

  A new in the box Supershot would retail in the $150 to $175 range- maybe even higher if it were exceptional and had the papers. Most of these pistols are well used and a typical retail price would be around $75. There was a Supershot 9 shot that had an adjustable finger rest made just before WWII and these bring a small premium. There were at least three versions of the Sealed Eight Supershot- standard, target, and the Protector. These bring a bit more money than the earlier pistols and are often found in slightly better condition than the first Supershot versions. There were tens of thousands of these pistols produced over the course of 30 years and only those in exceptional condition have any real value- the majority are simply shooters.

  the true production dates on the iver johnson's arms & cycle works '.22 supershot' are 1928 until 1941. this model was offered in a 7 and a 9 shot model. there is a very good possibility that the 7 shot model was dropped in 1931. these models should have a k prefix to the serial number located on the left side of the grip frame.
  
  the top of the barrel rib should be marked with the company name and address. the .22 supershot markings are found on the left side of the barrel.
  
  the iver johnson's arms & cycle works '.22 supershot sealed eight' was introduced in 1932 and remained in production until 1957, with a break for ww2 (1942-1945). there were three different models of the the .22 supershot sealed eight 1st 1932-1942, 2nd 1946-1954 and 3rd 1955-1957. most of these will have a L prefix in the serial number (lacation same). sometime before the end of production of the 3rd a a total of 100,000 was reached and the letter code was changed to 'A'. the protector model was a variation of the 1st model and was manufactured 1934-1941. all three models were offered with or without adjustable sights, those with adjustable sights are usually equiped with a fingerrest grip adapter (but not always).
  
  if you can give me the letter code and the serial number i may be able to put a year of manufacture to your revolver.
  
  during the production of the .22 supershot iver johnson also manufactured a true single action target revolver based on the .22 supershot frame, but that a different story.
