Angled vs Straight Spotting Scope
I'm considering a Leica Televid scope for benchrest shooting. My wife wants to use it for bird-watching,too. I can see where an angled eyepiece would be better for her but would it work for bench shooting?

I'd get the angled eyepiece. It's much more versatile than the straight eye piece.
I don't have any personal experience with the Leica scopes, but have used others with angled and straight eye pieces, and for all 'round shooting use, the angled scope is the only way to go.
Kowa scopes are fairly popular in several target shooting disciplines.

I have been told that the Straight is best for bench shooting and the angled is better for hunting. I like my straight spotting scope for bench shooting but I have not bothered using it for hunting being as I have to set it up so high to see out of it. As for Leica, they are excellent optics. I have a LRF800 range finder and the 7-42 BN binoculars and can only say good things about them. Speaking from expierience, do what your wife says. I wear the pants in the family but she tells me which pair to wear.

I have found that for position shooting the angled scope works best. It allows for the least movement from your position. Off a bench and using a stand beside you, I think you will find that this will also be true. 0 -
Yep, I'd go with the angled one too. Once you have it placed you only need to turn your head without moving the rifle from its position. It's actually better for your shooting but don't tell the wife. 0 -

I find the angled scopes difficult to locate the object in, but I am sure it is a matter of getting used to it. The Televid is a top choice for birding, and way more than you need for shooting unless you are a long range shooter. You will be pleased with it. If you wife is a really serious birder, consider the APO model with florite glass.

Eagle Optics seems to have the best prices: My choice will be the Televid 77mmAN ($945) and the 20x60 eyepiece ($329) for a total of $1274. Certainly not pocket change but a scope that should last my lifetime. Any suggestions for a quality bench tripod? I appreciate all the expert advice. 0 -

If you have a full sized tripod, you can set it up next to your bench and save the price of a smaller one. Cabela's has several inexpensive ($30-$50) smaller tripods that work just fine.

Consider looking into a free standing stand. This way you can look to your side a see the target. 0 -
I talked to Alex Roy of eurooptic and he said that the prices for 77mmAN and 20-60 eyepiece are great if they are High Definition. He said they are not that great if they are not high definition. He also said the Zeiss 65T Star has been winning the comparison reviews against the Leica (he sells both). He sells them (Zeiss)for $1150 (including the 15-45 eyepiece). Good luck which ever way you decide and you will be glad you went with the high end optics.
