ruger 10/22 factory bull or build your own
Hello I need some advice with a Ruger 10/22. I want to get 10/22 for my father. Now I own a 10/22-factory bull barrel with laminated stock and my father always sneaks it away from my safe to plink squirrels. Now I got a stainless 10/22 and I saw a butler creek bull barrel + stock combo for 150$. Now I can get a new factory SS bull barrel for 299$. What should I do?
-Customize my factory SS 10/22 or buy a factory bull barrel model
Besides:
-How is the Butler creek ss bull barrel compared to factory Ruger bull barrels
-Trigger wise does factory Ruger sticks ordinary parts and tops it of with bull barrels and stock or do they actually put different (custom) triggers and other components
-And one more what barrel could you recommend (bull) for 10/22(consider $$)

These are my educated opinions, not fact - so take it accordingly...
I'll try to answer your questions in the order you asked them. First, if you have a use for a standard version of the 10/22 then I'd just get a second one, if you don't then I'd re-do your existing one. I personally think Butler creek made the best aftermarket magazines, they have the best feeling synthetic stock and in my opinion there barrel is about dead-even with the hammer-forged version from Ruger.
Someone told me that the trigger parts in the hammer-forged target model are the same parts, but with a better polish/finish on them. I couldn't tell the difference. For $20 my gunsmith had them both shooting nicely, but for all-out performance I'd go with a Volquartsen.
Again, depending on what you are going to use the gun for would make a difference on what 10/22 barrel I'd recommend. For instance, for prone work I'd take a non-fluted barrel, probably Volquartsen, but on a budget, I'd either get the factory hammer-forged barrel, or the Butler Creek. If you are going to do little carrying, and mostly prone (prairie dog hunting), then I'd get a fluted barrel to reduce a little more weight. Now if you carry it most of the time (rabbit hunting, etc) yet want the accuracy of a bull barrel I'd get one of the new tensioned carbon fiber barrels.
Generally speaking you get what you pay for, and you can spend over $1,500 on a custom 10/22. Personally, I'd get a new hammer-forged target model or hold out until Ruger makes a .17 HMR direct from the factory. I've heard a lot of good things about it.

I gave $100 for a used 10/22 many years ago.
Midway USA had a sale with their heavy (.920) barrel & nice laminated stock for $100.
So for $200 (+ a little trigger work, free cause I did it + scope) I have a very nice gun that'll shoot 5/8" groups @ 100 yards with CCI miniMags.
Ruger makes a lot of cool guns, but if you buy anything besides the 'standard' model, you are going to pay for it.0 -
Thanks guys for honest advice. I think I will keep my standard 10/22.I think it will come handy when hunting for squirrels (like you said bull barrel is nice but kind of heavy when carrying around in woods) I went with the factory bull barrel Model. I got it today in local Sports Authority for 299-20%(coupon) so that was worth it.
While purchasing this gun I also got a Butler Creek bull barrel+stock combo for 139$-20%(coupon) the Sports Authority had some clearance sale so I actually got this barrel combo for 110 bucks.
So I think I will end up building something anyway
What can I say I am crazy Ruger guy
PS: My safe is chained from now on, but my old man has a gas torch
