cowboy gun what to buy?

just a few questions...if you were going to offer advice to somebody on the purchase of a cowboy action gun..what would be a decent model and caliber for starts...single or double action?..thinking about getting one..but dont know where to start..thanks for any help

    This is just my opinion, as I want one myself. I am looking at a single-action Ruger Vaquero with a 4 5/8s-inch barrel in .45 Colt. The Colt SAAs are waaay out of my price range, and the Ruger will last a lifetime if you take care of it. The Rugers are a lot more affordable for the working man.

    I second SP Tiger's choice of the Ruger Vaquero in stainless. I would get it in a .357 magnum so I could should light .38 special loads out of it. .38spl is much cheaper to shoot than .45LC. I'm thinking about getting a pair of these in the next year. One with a 7.5" barrel & one with a 4.5" barrel or less. That way I could carry strong side & cross draw.

    Also I'm thinking of getting one of these soon.

    the ones on auction..the 357's that i saw had rounded base and grips with a lower hammer pull..i guess i want the look of the 44..with the flat butt and the high trigger pull back..but in .357.5 1/2 barrel ss.havent seen one yet..what would be best...blue or bright finish?..seems stupid but i want the classic cowboy capgun look of the 50's but real,,thanks for the input so far..if you see one..Please let me know the #

    I would opt for the Ruger Bisley Vaquero,its a popular Handgun with cowboy action shooters.And built like a tank.

    I got a chance to handle one of their Rodeo revolvers & was very impressed. It had all the nice clicks when you cocked the hammer. It had a sturdy feel too. Supposedly they bought Colt's single action tooling & factory to build these guns.

    They are kinda pricey but not up to Colt prices yet.


    Edit: CDN had a deal going on American Western Arms SA's for $369 nickel or chrome w/your choice of barrel lengths. I was interested till I handled one Saturday. POS was my impression. The revolver actually rattled as I shook it in my hand.

    I purchased two Ruger Vaqueros in 44 mag in stainless for SASS and am in the process of getting the rest of my gear together. I have been satisfied with them with the exception that the Rugers are heavier than the Colts and some of the other repros.

    If I were to do it again I would probably go with 45LC and would get two different barrel lengths. The different lengths so that I would know which gun I was shooting by feel as they do not shoot at the same point of aim. 45LC because sometimes the 44 specials do not seem to feed as smoothly as I would like out of a 44 mag carbine.

    there are alot of questions that can't be answered here because of space limits and not knowing just what you want..
    its hard to beat a Ruger , Marlin and Rossi both make good Rifles
    I like the 45lc myself just because its more western and it makes bigger holes
    I like the Vaqueros for fast shooting and find that my thumb slips off of the hammer on the bisley vaquero ( the hammer on the bisley vaquero is lower than on the standard vaquero ) I also find that the real short barrel handguns are hard to hit with ie 4 1/2" or shorter because just a little movement makes a huge difference in point of impact
    price on Ruger blued with CC should be right at $400 give or take a few bucks
