Fishing for walleye

I will be going to Saskatchewan in a few weeks to hunt bear. We will be on a archery hunt so I won't be useing a rifle this time. We will have some time on our hands during the hunt and a lot of time to fish if we take our bears early. Being from the South and not ever seeing a walleye or lake trout I have no clue what to fish with. I prefer artafical baite, so anyone out there that can give me a few suggestions on what to take to fish with will be very helpful. We do fish for large mouth bass down here and if a walleye likes the old purple worm I will be set. There are just not many walleye or lake trout around here on the Gulf Cost.

    If you are set on using artificials slim lined crank baits (silver ,blue,green, black or a combination of, dressed jigs (1/16 to 3/8 oz with 2"-3" twisters or grubs, white, chartruse, pink or yellow) and jigging spoons are probably your best option. Depending on how far north you are going walleyes may still be post spawn and a sloooow presentation may work best. A texas rig with a 3" worm can work too. A little flavor in the form of crawlers or minnows (dead or alive) is always helpful. For walleye keep the line light remember the water is very clear. You don't need that 12 -17 lb stuff you use for bass. Except maybe if you get into some pike. I prefer 6# but 8# will do. Can't help you on the trout. Good Luck.[8D][:D][:D]

    I'm more of a Trout fisherman, and three basic rules to follow is use "SMALL" lures (1/4 to 1/8oz.), in red and/or chrome colors, and fish shallow in early morn'n & late even'n, then deep miday. GOOD LUCK!! ...Mark

    I too am a rebel, and not much of a fisherman. Yet, I have caught a lot of walleye.
    I went on quite a few canoeing trips in Ontario. We would spend 8 hours a day paddling, mostly on lakes, some rivers. So we would troll while paddling. We stopped and did some casting. I did the best on walleye with the Rattlin Rap. One day one color would work, one day another. Best was bright yellow, bright green, but sometimes red or brown would work.
    By the way the walleye is delicious. Be warned, once you have eaten fresh, fried walleye, when you get back home and catch a largemouth you will throw it to the cat.

    If your trolling, try differint plugs and deep diving crank baits or big spinners if there in shallower water.

    ALways take a few Rapala Shad Raps and Original minnows in Perch and Silver. They normally take a lot of fish, or at least attract strikes.
    You really should consider nightcrawlers and leeches as well. If your going to Gods country, might as well pull out what you can.

    Jigs,twister tails, fuzzy grubs, beatle spin white,black,purple
    use jig heads some floating some sinking white,black,yellow,pink then put the bodies on
    You can tip these with minnows,grubs,worms or just leave plain
    use a light rod touch

    funny to see that question on this site, but i might be able to help you with it a little. try fishing at the drop offs. they like it there. i dont know much about the wallye stuff but if you wanna sneekin a few bass use a crank bait. depending on the color clear water bright colors dark dark colors. USE A STEEL LEADER!!!!. i dont know how many time i've lost pike and pickeral from not haveing one. and what really pisses me of is when there right next to the boat and it bites through the line. sorry for the language but please spend the extra $5.00 and get plenty of steel leaders.

    I used steel leaders the first time I went up to Ontario. The second time, I noticed the guy I went with was catching twice as many fish as I was. He told me my steel leader was spooking the fish in that crystal clear water.
    I ditched the leader and my luck improved. Sometimes you get a pike and he will cut the line. I have caught a ten pound pike without the leader, however. I just make sure to examine the line after every fish caught, and after every snag, and I am quick to cut it and retie if there is any abrasion.
