A friend of mine is in the market for a varmit rifle. He was leaning toward a Howa 22-250 and actually purchased one but Howa had some stock problems and 5 months later has cancelled his order and gotten a refund. He has gotten advice that a custom 223 single shot is the way to go. He would prefer a bolt rifle with a magazine or a semi auto. He is left handed. Price within reason ( $2500.00 or less ) is no problem. He has already purchased a leupold scope so don't take a scope into the price mix. Any suggestions I can forward to him will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance as you guys always give expert advice. 0 -
My my the idiots on this site. If your friend has that kind of money to spend he should buy a custom rifle. And he should buy a 22-250. But the problem I have with all the junk info is the manufacture names they gave you. Refer him to Charlie Sisk of Sisk rifles. You can find him posting regularly on www.24hourcampfire.com. As for an action I would reccomend a remington model 700. Charlie will likely do the same. Barrel wise I would use the pac-nor. Charlie will probably also reccomend same. But here is the catch. He will wait for a while for a custom rifle. Or he can buy a savage 12bvss. Got mine in 300wsm for around $550. Accurate as hell. Didnt have to buy a fancy aftermarket trigger, didnt have to pay someone to do a bunch of work on it. Gun is perfectly balanced, has a nice fit and finish, is stainless steel, and has a nice laminated stock. And it has the new accutrigger. Your friend can adjust it himself and it breaks as crisp and clean as any high dollar after market trigger. Have a Remington custom with a timney trigger and wish I could put the savage trigger on it. And just think he would have almost $2000 left to buy ammo. But as the saying goes, Different strokes for different folks. But please get him to check with Charlie first if he just has to have a custom rig. If not get the savage. A remington factory gun will get you what you pay for. A savage will get you MORE than what you pay for.

bullhauler: i agree with about 98% of your answer, the rest was "bullhauler". granted, the new accutrigger from savage is a nice feature however, it does not even come close to the performance of my custom remington.[;)] 0 -
Ohiohog: adjusted my trigger on my 22-250 VSSF. Thought that I had about 2.5 to 3# pull...boy was I wrong, how about 1.5[:0] sure is nice though.[^] Them remington triggers are pretty good when they are adjusted, but it takes a little time and care to do it right.
Not like that fart trigger on your 6mm Rem.,"2 oz." to light for me.

OK ohio hog lets cut to the chase. For custom guns I will take a custom remington anyday. Have one myself that shoots great. But here is the catch. I spent extra money to buy a trigger that met my needs. Their factory triggers arent safe below 2.5 lbs. Have seen that my self. Adjusted one down to about 1.5lbs. It went off without the trigger being pulled. I check all my rifles for misfires the same way. Adjust trigger, make certain it is unloaded, cycle the action, flip to fire, hold by barrel and hit buttstock on floor. Havent seen a factory trigger yet that wouldnt go off. As for my new savage, well lets just say it shoots. Have several groups in the high .3's and low .4's amd those were fired with handloaded hunting ammo. Barnes xlc's to be exact. And the trigger is at 1.5lbs. And I have been unable to make it misfire. And it came on the rifle. Didnt have to spend 80 bucks for it aftermarket. And yes I do believe my savage will shoot with your custom remington. Probably even outshoot it. Unless you are real consistant with itty bitty groups in the .3's better leave her in the case.

If you can't get a remington trigger below 2.5lbs with the safety still in tact, it means your not a gunsmith. Mine are well below that, and every one is safe as a 3 position mauser. Because, and only because they were stoned inside by a GUNSMITH, and the sear engagement was LEFT ALONE!!. Those who adjust their own triggers down, by adjusting the sear engagement, are way off base. The instructions for adjusting them down are for the average joe to follow, not to get them perfect by any means, only to lighten them for field use.
An $80 trigger is STILL JUNK, and always will be. Unless you have a jewell, don't waste the money, get the factory trigger done.
ALL my remingtons are in the .3's and better,..if not, they are examined by the gunsmith, and fixed. There never has been nor will there ever be a Savage that outshoots a custom 700 build-up. It's nice to have confidence in one's rifle, but comparing it to something built by a COMPETENT gunsmith is pure fodder.
A built up savage vs a built up remington,...maybe. The jury is still out on that one
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

bullhauler: first off, i believe that savage makes an excellent rifle for the money, and the new accutrigger design is ahead of most manufacturers in the accuracy game. however: my 6mm rem has been with me a long time and is all custom. i do not do any of the custom work on this gun, i leave it to a professional gunsmith. this is a benchrest rifle which i use for groundhogs as well. the trigger job on this weapon alone was 175.00 and completely safe(and extremely light). 2 stage set trigger/hold your breath and touch it with the end of your index finger. theres no way the accutrigger can match that. 0 -
Perfectly stated JustC... Gun triggers are nothing to take chances with - kinda like jumping in and working on the brakes on a vehicle - if either one fails there's gonna be trouble!
My professionally done factory Rem. 700 triggers are nice, light, and crisp. They cost me $20 each.

Just to put my nickel in---I have a Rem. Custom 700, single shot bolt action, 22-250, bench rest stock, crowned bull barrel and is topped off with a 20x Unertl Ultra Varmit. It has a Canjar trigger set at 1.5. Never had a problem with the thing going off by slamming the buttstock on the ground---cause I never do that with my rifles. Anyway the rifle shoots in the .300 at 200yds with factory ammo. Good enough to hit what I'm aiming at. Don't own a savage but Ive read they shoot well. 0 -
Never stated they would misfire with aftermarket triggers. I stated that misfires are very common with factory triggers adjusted below 2.5lbs. But the thing is, you guys are spending extra money to do what mine does from the factory. And as for bumping the stock on the floor, that is a good firm jar. I am not trying to put holes in the floor. And of course I remove the scope first. As for .3 groups at 200 yds, we shall see. It does them at 100 with hunting ammo. Havent tried any target loads for it yet. planning on some 168mk loads and maybe a 165 or 180 bt. I feel pretty sure it will get close. I dont shoot factory ammo because I dont like the factory offerings in 300wsm. Prefer to shoot the 165&168 xlc. Oh and by the way, just keep on wasting money on trigger jobs, I have better things to buy. And one last thought. I have a custom remington myself. It is a 7mm-08AI. 700 action, Douglass prem. 26" #5heavy barrel, custom cut fajen stock, timney trigger. It may outshoot my savage a little;but, the trigger sure isn't $100 better than the one that came on my savage.
