AK disassembly help!!!
OK, I am trying to refinish my egyption Maadi AK. I have all the parts taken apart and want to remove the trigger group and all the internals. Its kind of difficult to get in all the small corners with the pins in place and want to remove them so i can refinish the whole thing. The pins are hard to remove and I don't know if they come out at all. Any advice? how difficult is it to actually remove the guts and then put them back together?

This would be one for the HULVIN; not sure which pins are in the way-the ones in the trigger group itself?

My gosh, a question I can actually answer (for once). I have replaced all the trigger group parts in my AK several times and replaced them with Made in USA trigger parts to comply with section 922r of the BATF regs. If your gun came with a pistol grip it already has made in USA trigger parts in it.
Be very careful on knocking out the 2 very large pins that have internal cams on them in the trigger group. You must first lift off the wire that runs over the cams on the inside of the receiver. After you have removed the rigid steel wire from the pin cams the 2 pins will almost fall out by themselves. Also, there is a tiny spring underneath the hammer/disconnector that will fall out on the floor and be lost if you don't know it is there. Then your gun will not fire right at all. It happened to me. If you need more info or help please ask as I have done it several times to my AK.

Beantole...got another for ya. did you get an aftermarket trigger set. I was reading that the century crap (the hackers that put the junk parts in when they import them) was not very good and caused the crappy trigger. where did you get it and how much did it set you back?

I have diassembled dozens of Kalashnikov's while visiting with friends in Bulgarian Military and have watched Bulgarian technicians take these rifles apart doen to the last pin and beyond for rebuilding. Beantole's information about removing the wire loop of the pin retaining spring is correct and this is what usually causes most people trouble. This spring arches over a groove in the hammer pin and then runs underneath into a groove in the trigger pin. Take the tip of a punch, insert it into the loop and pull the loop out towards the front. On all military AK rifles I have come across the hammer and trigger pins will come out easily when pushed from right to left. On the Century AK's these pins are sometimes really jammed in and may take some effort to remove- after all each of these Century AK's were built with left over parts from 5 other rifles...maybe from three different countries!

pikeal1: I cannot remember where I purchased the "made in USA" trigger replacments but I think it was Federal Arms out of Minnesota or Michigan. They have a web sight now I think called "Guns N Stuff" or some similar name. It costs me $40. for all the new parts. Tapco also sells them for the same price.
What mark christian said is correct about removing the solid steel wire from the 2 cams inside the receiver but I find it easy to do using a small needle nose pliars. I grap the solid wire and lift it out of the 2 cams on the 2 large pins
then the pins just about fall out of the gun. Again, be careful not to lose the tiny spring that is hidden under the hammer/disconnector/follower or whatever it is called. It is right about the size of a spring found on a cheap ball point pen and when I lost mine I used a cheap substitute until I could get an original and the cheap spring worked fine. Good luck!!

Thanks for all the help guys. I got it all taken down yesterday and will start sanding it tonight, God willing. I didn't lose anything and have all parts set aside for reassembly (which from what I hear will be a chore). Just wanted to say thanks to all who helped me with this...you guys are the best.

I don't know if your interested but I had a soldid walnut pistol grip stock made for my Chinese AK. It even has the hole in the butt stock for the cleaning kit. Soup Bowl Enterprises (actually one guy)
made if for me for $90. He is on the net. It took a while for him to get it finished and to me but it is a hell of a good looking and functional AK stock.
