removal of AK rear sight
How can I remove the rear sight on an AK. It has a pin but it won't come out. I tried to punch it out with a punch and hammer...but it didn't budge (I didn't beat it too hard)
any clues?

The removal of the rear sight is not a usual takedown procedure and the only time I've even seen it done was by armorers in Bulgaria and Albania who needed to replace the rear sights which were damaged in the field. If you have no good reason to remove the rear sight I suggest that you leave it alone. If you still feel the need to do this (and I have no idea what purpose it would serve) here is the lowdown straight from the former Communist Bloc boys who use these rifles every single day.
Forget about the punch as the sight is not pined in place...you'll just damage the sight and no accomplish a thing. The rear sight actually rides in a key way and is held in place by a piece of spring steel. If you look at the profile of the rear sight you'll see that there is a larger opeing directly below the "pin" which you were mistakenly trying to drive out. If you flip the sight straight up you will clearly see the piece of spring steel which holds the sight in place and allows for adjustments to elevation. You need to compress this piece of steel and at the same time push the rear sight down so that the "pin" is in the larger opening of the keyway. Once you have done this you will have enough (just enough) clearence to slightly rotate the rear sight assembly and lift it out of the key way. Installation of the sight is the reverse and a real nightmare since you have to keep the spring compressed and still get the rear sight lined up in the key way before you can lock it home. The spring steel itself is staked into the rear sight housing and cannot be removed to aid in this operation. Good luck. By the way, I never responded to your posting on USA made trigger parts because I am only familiar with MILSPEC Kalashnikov rifles, the USA compliant replacement parts are simply not of any interest to me so I have opinions on their quality.

Back to Home Depot and Get a Roll of 1" Masking Tape....carefully cover the entire sight and cut with a razor blade to match the edge.......Good Luck!

There are some nice windadge adjustable rear AK sights--I prefer that to adjusting the front sight and having the front sight "bar" off-centered in its circular shoud.
It is "tricky" to get the rear sight out and in.
Try using a small hardwood shim to compress the spring; use a "C"-clamp with one side contacting the shim to compress the spring while the sight is flipped all the way up; the other side of the clamp will be contacting the bottom of the receiver.
Once it's started out of the notch in the keyway, you can remove the clamp (if you need more clearance) and slide the sight by gripping it with pliers (use padding on the teeth to prevent marring). The sight will still be under tension from the spring, but will slide if it has cleared the notch it locks into.0 -

Mark...first off, thanks for information. Just want to let you know that I greatly appreciate all the information that you provide me and all the others on this forum.
I used a pair of pliers, a flat head screwdriver bit, and some steel wool to use as padding for the pliers so I don't really screw things up.
I was able to get the rear site off and finally painted the reciever and attached parts. Maybe I'll just replace the rear site with one of those peep hole sites....but I haven't decided yet.
Once again, thanks for all of the information you guys/gals have provided...there's a reason why I keep asking you guys first.

I have an AK and my opinion is the sight system on it is a piece of junk----not because I can't get it sighted correctly but because no one should have to go through all that hassle to adjust windage on the front sight. Very bad design. Very bad.
