Is This Possible 300H&H/Weatherby

Pre-64 Model 70 mfd. 1961 (#508833). Matching bolt #. 26" barrel, 2.5 X 8 power Weaver variable scope & lenscovers, leather sling, checkered forearm & pistol grip, hooded front sight, Whiteline deluxe recoil pad, 12.75" L.O.P., orig. Monte Carlo stock. Owner (retired Lumber Co. exec.) says will shoot 300 Weatherby & 300 H&H cartridges. Originally made as 300 H&H; & gunsmithed to 300 Weatherby. Owner was avid hunter, has usual handling & usage marks, nothing detrimental. Wonderful buy for someone who wants a useful Pre-64 in a powerful caliber. Please add $25 for insured shipment.

    If you take a look at a .300 H & H case, you will notice it has a very distinct taper from the base towards the bullet end. The .300 Weatherby doesn't have this.......And, if you try to put a .300 Weatherby cartridge into a gun chambered for .300 H & H, it won't go in because it doesn't fit at all. It will only start in and stop. You can easily see why if you will simply got to your reloading manual and check the difference in the dimensions of the cases. I cannot see any way it would be possible to have a gun chambered in such a way as to allow the use of either of these cartridges in the same gun. However, someone may have a different opinion as apparently this Auction has someone that thinks its possible. I wouldn't try any of it......for any reason, myself!

    it is possible to fire a 300 h&h in the 300 weatherby but not vise versa. the 300 weatherby was originally developed from the 300 h&h case fireformed or blown out. i don't know why you would want to but you could do so unless you have a large supply of h&h brass

    300 H&H rechambered to 300 WBY should still be able to use the 300 H&H ammo as fire forming loads. You would lose some velocity, but it should work. Both have the same belt diameter and both headspace off that same belt. It is just like doing a 458 Win Mag to a 450 Ackley, it will shoot both. The 458 Lott is the same way. It to will shoot 458 Win mag or 458 Lott ammo. This is not the case if you were to reverse these chamberings.

    Since the .300 Weatherby was made from the H&H case, it should be possible to chamber and fire and H&H in the Weatherby chamber. I suppose that Roy Weatherby did that to fireform his brass when he invented the .300 Wby Mag. I don't think I would do it.

    I have the same setup made from a 1948 .300 H&H. It shoots great. When shooting 300 H&H I have not noticed any problem with accuracy. This is a fairly common to find one of these convertrd H&H's.

    The process of going from 300 H&H to 300 WBY is perfectly safe and reliable. I have done it personally several times when I needed 300 WBY and didn't have time to order it or want to pay through the nose for it. Besides, it is just like fireforming Ackley Improved by shooting factory ammunition in the Ackley chamber. Same same. It also provides you with brass that matches your chamber, including the shoulder, exactly. As long as the chamber is cut correctly in first place, safety is not a problem.

    I obviously didn't think this through properly all the way. Thanks for pointing that out, Guys! I knew you couldn't put a .300 Weatherby into a .300 H & H, but if I had continued to think about it this would have all come back to me. I have an adversion to having cases that are headstamped one thing but are actually another. As a matter of keeping my stuff straight, I use the cases marked for the caliber for that caliber. As far as Fire-Forming brass, yep, I'm sure we all do that and just neck size afterwards for the same gun. My habit of using the cases that are marked for so long cut off my brain activity and, well......Not the First time......Hahahahaha!!! Sorry for talking and letting my brain get "out of gear.".....

    Because these belted Magnum cases all headspace on the belt, any belted cartridge that will chamber can be fired, usually safely. (Obviously, caliber must match, etc..) I have fire-formed a lot of .300 Weatherby brass from .300 H&H, but never checked it for accuracy or velocity.

    Sure it will work (300 H&H in a Weatherly chamber) but it's like going from chicken salad to chicken sh*t, to mess up one of these nice rifles with that re-chamber job IMO :o).
