Checking headspace with Plastic-gage???
Does anyone know or have you ever heard of using plastic-gage to check the headspace on a rifle or pistol?
I have used plastic-gage to check the clearance on main and rod bearings when I was building engines. It seems to me that if a new empty case was put in the chamber with a piece of plastic-gage on the head, and then close the bolt, I would think it would flatten out and give a good indication of the clearence between the bolt face and the cartridge. Am I crazy or just living dangerously with such thoughts?

Might work OK with a headspace gauge but I wouldn't trust it with a case. Too many variations in them. I use shim stock with a headspace gauge to see just how much HS there is. Obviously if the no-go (field) goes it needs adjustment anyway. 0 -
Specs on cases,as said above,run from max to min. Saami..and one would have no idea where any one case fell.So you would have the headspace of that ONE case only....
The Lord must like 'gunsmith's ' who set up a chamber with a case...
