    Does anyone have any experience with two or more of these handgun cal's, ref. felt recoil? Smith VXR 8 1/2" .460 ported
    Ruger Super Redhawk 7 1/2" .454 Casull
    Ruger SRH 7 1/2" in .480
    Freedom Arms 7 1/2" 454 Casull, or 475 Linebaugh. I have had several of the Casull's in the past, and they just aren't that much fun to shoot in my opinion. How much would magna-porting help" THX in advance HAWWKSHAW

    76.45 foot pounds of recoil and 25.62 feet per second recoil velocity. This is based on a 7.5# shotgun and a velocity of 1300 FPS for the shot load.

    300 win mag. 29.27 foot pounds of recoil and 15.35 feet per second recoil velocity. This is based on a 180 bullet at 3000 FPS and an 8# rifle.

    That would be the speed in which your firearm is traveling rearward. Just like a bullet doing 3000 FPS velocity forward.

    I can relate... Benelli Super Black Eagle - 3.5" mags vs. my .300 win = no contest. [B)]

    I never notice it hunting, but patterning sure sucks. I do think the recoil "speed" on shotguns are slower, but still kick hard none-the-less. Just don't get caught between the tree and your gun - ouch.

    OK. One last question? Using the 3.5" 2oz load @ 76.45 foot pound in a pump shotgun, which is a solid lock-up. What would the foot pound be for a semi-auto?

    People say all the time that a semi-auto reduces the recoil, in my opinion (if this is true) it is simply because they are typically heavier than thier single-barrel or pump cousins. The Benelli is recoil-operated so it doesn't bleed off gases to work the action.
    My guess is that it'd take the 76.45 and reduce it to 76.44...

    I wouldn't port the gun, I'd just get a better recoil pad. If you port it then it goes from being bad on your shoulder to being even worse on your ears. Or, one can always shoot a little lighter load. I used 3.5" for geese for years, then got tired of buying them so I dropped to 3". I can't tell the difference in range or knock-down, but I can sure tell the difference in recoil and also on my wallet.

    SIMS VIBRATION LABORATORIES is your answer............the limb saver recoil pad will reduce your felt recoil tremendously.........best recoil pad on the market and it's selling thru the roof.......sales on this recoil pad would not be so tremendous if it didn't work. Get one, you won't be sorry............

    It sounds like the abuse my shoulder is taking (aglore), the cost saving and reduction in recoil (bambihunter) with a recoil pad (woodyd70) is the way I am going to go with with gun. Thanks to the three of you for your time and ideas. I needed a different perspective. My shoulder appreciates it!![:D]

    As bambihunter said, the recoil Ft-Lb's will be the same. What changes is the FPS of the recoil (slower with the semi-auto). The increase in recoil time turns a sharp jabbing recoil into a slow(er) rolling recoil.

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    Recoil is mostly from the "equal & opposite reaction" of the projectile traveling down the bore. As most have pointed out. Why then is porting an effective recoil reducer? Because a portion of recoil (estimates vary from 10-20%) comes from the "jet effect" of the gasses (forcing the gun rearward) as the projectile leaves the barrel. Porting releases these gasses prior to the exit of the shot etc and removesd that portion of the recoil. The porting can also direct these gasses upward (& rearward) to help muzzle jump. A gas operated semi auto does exactly the same thing which is why the do indeed "kick" less. Recoil operated guns like the browning A-5 & Rem 11 seem to kick more which may be a result of (instead of a 7# gun) a 2# barrel with a 2 3/4" head start before it frams you in the shoulder :o). Porting (as was pointed out) also greatly increases the noise level. I hate porting on hunting guns where you never have hearing priotection but shoot a cutts equipped skeet gun. I would either get a good sorbothane type pad installed and just use a shoulder protector of the same material while you are pattering. I've never talked to a hunter who felt the recoil when he shot a turkey :o).
