Help ID this 7mm ammo
I am looking at a deal on a 7mm Mauser. The guy is selling 1000 rounds of ammo with the gun. So the question is, Is this ammo any good. This is what I got from a long distance phone call:
On the box it says--CHILEAN--FAMAE--[there is a drawing of a feather and sword, crossed]--CHILE--POLVORA--ESFERO DAL--BELGA
On the cartridge base it says FME--1976--CHILE
Is this stuff any good? Where was it made? Is it corrosive?

Hello Allen, FAMAE is the registered trade name for the Chilean State Arms factory, Fabricaciones Militares del Ejercito, located in Santiago (I can give you their address and telephone number if you wish). In addition to ammunition this firm also manufacuters a copy of the Beretta M92 (looks more like a Taurus) and a neat little 9mm sub machinegun known as the Pistola Ametralladora (looks sort of like a British Sterling without the barrel jacket), a copy of the Colt Police Positive, and other firearms which are of no interest here. This firm is not all that old having come into existance in the late 1940's and was the first government aresenal in Chile's history- only a handfull of small private firms existed prior to WWII. Is the ammunition good? Probably it is very good since it was intended for issue to the Chilean Military for use in the Mauser rifles which were still in service in the mid 1970's. Is it corrosive? You can probably count on that. Just break out the hot soapy water, I'm sure you know the drill. I hope this helps you.

What kind of mouser you getting? I made a decision along time ago not to run corrosive ammo through my more expensive mousers. If you are wanting blasting ammo to fire through a shooter then go for it.
Followup: You may want to find out the condition of the barrel on this mouser as it probably has had corrosive ammo fired through it.

Don't know of any corrosive ammo mfd after 1950. Could be some, but I've never seen it. No big deal shooting corrosive ammo in a bolt action either, but it MUST be cleaned immediately. Scrub with soap & water and follow up with clean and then a rust inhibitor. Just like you would clean a muzzle loader. There are lots of nice bores around that were used extensively with corrosive ammo, but were properly cared for. Never shoot corrosive ammo in an auto (rifle) though as the desposits get into the gas system and are very difficult to clean. 0
