9MM HI-POINT CARBINE RIFLE.
I WAS WONDERING IF SOMEONE COULD TO TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS GUN AND IF ITS REALIABLE AND IF IT HAS ENOUGH POWER TO TAKE DOWN A DEER?

Good plinker, I wouldn't recommend the 9mm caliber as being suitable for hunting deer though.

WHY WOULDNT IT BE SUITABLE FOR DEER?
kenny young0 -
It would "work", but it might not work quickly enough. You don't want to take a chance on wounding a deer and not being able to find it. A lever gun in 357 or 30.30 would be a better choice IMHO. Or any gun in the .243-.270 range

a 9mm just dosen't have the power behind the slug to take down a dear as effectively as a rifle cartridge or a shotgun slug. Too low of a velocity. You're better off moving up to a magnum pistol cartridge or a medium-high powered rifle cartridge. For deer my absolute minimum cartridge would be a .357 maximum ctg.

COULD A 9MM BULLET KILL AN ATTACKER QUICKLY AND HOW FAST WOULD IT KILL THEM WITH A HEAD OR CHEST SHOT?
kenny young0 -
Yes a 9mm can kill somebody instantly if you hit them in the right spot. Don't plan on a head shot, you got about a 99% chance of missing on a head shot when you are pumped up on adrenalin and scared. Chest shots are the easiest, aim for the center mass. If you shoot them a couple times there it'll probably knock the fight right outta them.

Generally, states have a minimum caliber and cartridge length. I don't know about all states, except here, .357 mag just works out as minimum size pistol, exception was made for 10mm. 9mm wipes out rabbits and woodchucks with ease, but even a snarly raccoon occasionally gets a little large sometimes.
A friend wanted to buy a 9mm to go achery black bear(backup weapon allowed for bear). I asked him why he wanted it, besides being not legal for black bear. He was unconvinced until I made read the game
laws here. Besides, I told him, I thought you wanted to get his attention, not just make him more pissed off than he already is with you and your bow and arrow.0 -
IM SORRY BUT IM NOT BUYING THAT ONE BIT.IT DOESNT EVEN SEEM REASONABLE.COPS CARRY 9MM'S AND HAVE SHOT AND BAGGED UP PLENTY OF BODIES AND TOSSED THEM OVER TO THE CORONERS TO EXAMINE.I THINK YOU SHOULD STOP WATCHING WAR MOVIES AND START HITTIN THE SHOOTING RANGE OR TEST A 9MM ROUND ON A DEER AND SEE WHAT REACTION YOU GET OUT OF EM I GUARANTEE HE WONT BE RUNNING WITH A NICE PLACED HEAD SHOT FROM EVEN 50 YARDS.
DONT START NO SHYT THERE WONT BE NO SHYT.0 -
Playboy, first off, don't flame on this forum.
second, deer have a higher body density and bone density than humans do, yes, you can shoot a deer just behind the ear with just about anything and kill it, that being said, you'd have to be able to hit the deer in that spot first before the bullet will work. The round will have to have enough velocity to penetrate the skull and it's hide. I seriously doubt, in fact, I could almost guarantee that a hi-point 9mm carbine will land that round in that quarter sized spot on a deer's head from 50 yards.
And archeralley is correct, most states have a regulation that states what calibers are appropriate for each type of game and they also have magazine capacity restrictions which a hi-point would be in violation of.
But, according to your previous post it seems you think that you already knew it all so why did you even ask?

So, who's your favorite big screen cowboy?0 -
IM ALMOST 100% SURE THAT A 9MM CAN PENETRATE A DEER SKULL AND KILL IT INSTANTLY ALMOST 8 TIMES OUT OF 10 AND IM SURE ALOT OF PEOPLE WILL BACK UP MY STATEMENT.

Got a new gun for my ex-wife.....pretty good trade, huh?0 -
Playboy, nobody here said that a 9mm wouldn't penetrate a deer skull, it will, but if you read my previous post I answered your question already, you have to be close enough for the round to maintain the velocity needed to penetrate, otherwise you are just going to give it a headache and you need a gun that has the accuracy to hit such a small target from any kind of distance. A hi-point 9mm el-cheapo scrap metal carbine is not the firearm for this mission.
And yea, family guy, I got that impression as well but I'm trying hard to be a nice enough guy. But, I don't think I'm getting through.

THIS ALMOST DISGUSTS ME THAT YOU ACTUALLY DOUBT THE DEADLY CAPABILITIES OF A 9MM BULLET.ANOTHER THING JUST A SUGGESTION "GO GET THE BOOK HANDGUN STOPPING POWER" ITS SHOWS RESULTS FROM FIREARMS AND YOU CAN LEARN SOMETHING NEW ABOUT THEM.9MM'S ARE RANKED UP THERE HIGH AS A PERSONAL PROTECTION WEAPON AND THE MILITARY ADOPTED THE BERETTA (9MM) OVER THE COLT 1911 (45 AUTO) WHY IS THAT? SOMETHIN ABOUT YOUR STATEMENT DIDNT COME OUT SO REALISTIC NOW DID IT?

I also wouldn't go deer hunting with a 1911, troll.

YOUR OPINION ABOUT THE 9MM IS WAY INTO LEFT FIELD ITS ALMOST FUNNY.WHERE DO YOU GET OFF SAYING A 9MM IS A VARMINT CARTRIDGE?

Why ask a question like this when you obviously have already formulated your own opinion?

YO, Playboytroll,
1- the 9mm is ILLEGAL for hunting game animals
2- Sanow's book describes some pretty amazing wounds, has some graphic pix, and has nothing to do with real world injuries
3- Hi Point carbine is a good weapon for plinking and maybe as an under-the-seat cop backup gun; not hunting
4- the forum is ASK the experts- if you have an opinion before you post, after reading the responses you can make up your own mind(or not)
5- Iget the impression that you are fascinated with guns, pipe bombs(try gettin' a deer with one of those!), watching animals suffer, breaking the law, and quite possibly Klebold/Harris-type stuff; don't worry-they are after you already.
If you know it all; you must have been listening.WEAR EAR PROTECTION!0 -

I keep my Hi-Point behind the seat.Got tired of being hasseled
about the P89 since I don't have a carry permit.Loads of fun but
for DEER? Give me a break!!! ONLY IN SELF DEFENSE!!!
IT'S WHAT PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THEMSELVES THAT MAKES THEM AFRAID.0 -
Kenny, first off welcome to the boards. Second, chill out a might, you seem more interested in brawling than taking part in the exchange of ideas.
Like you, I think the 9mm is a decent self defense round. As a deer hunter, I am sure it will kill a deer but it is not the best choice for the job. As mentioned by others, it is also not legal for hunting in most states.
Finally, the Hi-point is a fun little carbine, most are very reliable from what I have seen, accuracy is ok.

i was under the impression that sanow's study was based on real world gunshot statistics involving humans?? is that not correct?
as for 9mm on game it's hard to say. I saw a 100 pound pig walk through half a mag from a 9mm beretta beginning at about 30 yards until he passed the guy with the beretta and i stopped/killed it instantaneously with a close range shot from a 12 guage full of bird shot. (i shot it in self defense, as it was running/trotting at me)
he never reacted to the 9mm shots. i don't remember what type of ammo he was using but that obviously makes a big difference0 -

playboy,
you are seriously trolling here.
However,
In California it is legal to hunt deer, bear and pigs with a 9mm. I wouldn't suggest it, but its legal.
From California 2002 regulations:
(c) Pistols and revolvers using centerfire
cartridges with softnose or expanding bullets
may be used to take deer, bear and wild pigs.0 -
