Can a Python mate with a Trooper?
I have a 2.5" Python barrel and so now I need a frame to put it in. Would I have other Colt options besides buying an over priced Python (the market is nuts now!)? How about a Trooper? Thanks for the replies Colt experts!

I have to do this by memory, which may or may not, be correct. Seems to me if you put that barrel on a Trooper, there is a little space up on top that has to be welded in.......but as I said,...Memory! Judge Colt will read this and I know he is familiar with this possibility. He will answer you, I'm sure, and then you will know for sure what it takes if possible and all about it......Judge Colt...Where are you?

Way back when, Colt also made a .357 called, oddly enough, the "Colt .357". They were made between 1953 and 61. I believe the frame is identical to the Python.
The old "Officers Model Match" also was very close to the Python frame. I carried one as a duty gun before we switched to auto's.
My dept at that time was cheap, and issued 20 yr old handguns to the new guys.
Either one of these frames might do the job, but first check the demensions, and consult a gunsmith. Of course you will also need a suitable cylinder.0 -
You could mate it to a Smith K frame and make a "Smolt". Of course, to some diehard Colt or Smith owners this would be an outrage.[:D]
I have two friends that did this around 20+ years ago. One had a
4 inch Python barrel put on a M-19 Smith. It is a great shooter and conversation piece.

I believe the barrel would mount (sorry, had to do it) on an older Trooper frame (or an original ".357 Colt") but there would be a gap at the top where the rib on the Python barrel wouldn't meet the sloping top strap on the Trooper. The front sight on the Python barrel also would probably be off for the sighting groove as the Python has an adjustable rear sight and the front blade was designed to work with it and not the Trooper. Doesn't sound practical to me.

All I-frame Colts have basically interchangable parts. The I-frame began in 1908 with the Army Special, which became the Official Police. Other I-frames are the Officers Models, Commando, "357," Python, Trooper, Border Patrol and Marshall. The Camp Perrys are I-frame derivitives, but are not revolvers so few parts interchange.
However, as stated, the Python has a rib and the front of the top strap on a Python is machined flat so it mates up with the rib. If you put a Python barrel on any other I-frame, as mentioned, there will be a gap at the front of the top strap. If that does not bother you, the barrel will work fine. As we discovered with the "bastard Python" thread of vipereater, there was a firm that used to weld up top straps and add adjustable rear sights to make Python clones out of Official Police revolvers and the like.
If you sell the barrel and put the money you would spend on another decent I-frame with adjustable sights, you can buy a shooter Python for about the same.0 -
Bear in mind that the original 'Trooper' is NOT the same as the 'Trooper Mk III' or 'Mark V.'
