    Brownells sells just the tool that your refering to. Handle is screwed into the center of 1" round stock. The tool works good for me and I worked the rings until I have around 95-97% lap.
    The compound I use is what comes with the tool.

    yes valve grinding compound will work just fine a piece of bar stock with a handle welded on as well although the one brownells sells will do a little better job since it has grooves cut into the surface to hold lapping compound.

    I would not weld the handle on the lapping bar. Anything but a small tig weld will warp the bar and you will do more harm than good. Drill and tap for the handle to screw in to or clamp it on.

    Thanks guys, I made one today out of machined bar stock. Drilled and tapped it and put a wood handle on top, used valve grinding compound as the lapping agent. WORKS GREAT!!!!! didnt take as long as I thought it would take to lap the rings.
