winchester P17
I love old guns and recently found a Winchester p17 in a pawn shop. It has a blond wood stock that I assume is a refinished stock. It is original, with the inspector's mark. Bore is great, metal is very good. I was wondering, can this shoot any 30-06, or do I need to stick to 150gr. FMJ? The price was only $199. I didn't get it right away, and it is in a town in Mo. that was hit by a tornado. The shop is still there, but they have been without electricity for a couple days. What do you guys think?

ANY .30/06 WILL WORK FINE, SOME WILL SHOOT BETTER THAT OTHERS. SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD DEAL AT $200. 0 -
If you don't buy it, let me know. I have a nice Eddystone that the Winchester would look good next to. Sounds like an acceptable price, go for it. I think you should be able to shoot any 30-06 round in it, asuming it checks out safe and head space is ok. It's nice to find one that hasn"t been chopped up into a sporter. 0 -
That sounds like a good deal on a Winchester 1917. I have seen them at twice that price lately. I wouldn't worry about any 30-06 round as this was one of the strongest military actions ever made. I have seen a lot of 300 Win Mags built on these actions. 0 -
Ok, the shop is open again, but my bubble has been burst. The bolt on this gun has a "R" stamped on the underside of it. Is this a Remington bolt? I didn't see any numbers on it. Does this present a headspace problem? Also, in the buttstock space there is a borebrush, but it is in a plastic case. Wouldn't original equipment be metal? Thanks for any help.

Bolts shouldn't be a problem (unless your look'n for collector grade), as long as their headspaced properly. The only problem I've heard about P17/P14's is that the ones produced in the Eddystone arsenal had problems with heat treating on the receives. Anybody else hear the same? ...Mark

NONE OF THE P-14/17'S HAD HEAT TREATING PROBLEMS, THIS IS AN OLD WIVES TALE. THE ONLY PROBLEM THEY HAD WAS OVERLY TIGHT BARREL THREADS (ALL MAKES, BUT MOST OFTEN IN THE EDDYSTONE). THIS RESULTS IN A CRACK IN THE RECIEVER STARTING AT THE FRONT OF THE RECIEVER. 0 -
The P-17 is one of the strongest militaries ever made. Bolt lockup was extremely uniform: do not worry about headspace (it is an overrated problem). There never was a heat treat problem with them (it was on early 1903's). The Remington bolt will detract from collector value but will not interfere with shootability. At $200, it is a STEAL! CMP is getting $425 + shipping + tax (Total just under $500). The ONLY problem was on those that were rebarrelled. In removing the original bbl, it was possible to damage the receiver and create fine cracks. Look for the date on the bbl. If it is pre-1920,you are OK.
