Ruger Convertible Question

Trying to quell an argument from the range.

Can a new model Blackhawk 9mm convertible cylinder fit and be used in a new model Blackhawk nonconvertible .357? The gun expert in the discussion says YES. What is the correct answer?

  How easy is it to switch the cylinders out between calibers on the Blackhawk convertible? I'm talking about just taking out one cylinder it was supplied with and putting in the other it came with (like from .357 to 9mm), not switching to completely different calibers (like from .357 to .45 Colt), which would require a gunsmith.

  Yes it can, but it would have to have been fitted.
  
  The extra cylinders supplied with the convertible models have been fitted and timed at the factory to work with that gun.
  
  If you took a cylinder and dropped it into "any" new model blackhawk, it may or may not fit right. The only way to make sure it would fit and function correctly is to have the factory do it.

  If the cylinder stops are not timed correctly to the newer gun; it might shoot into part of the frame, scraping lead, copper, and possibly dermis.
  I'd be happy to try it-just send the gun, $500, a 12-pack of Dos Equis and some ammo. It might take a while though.....

  I used to own a Ruger Convertible Blackhawk. I think it could be done but you would have to have the cylinder timed. I remember reading an article in G&A several years ago about convertible revolvers. Another issue that might come is that a convertible revolver barrell in this caliber is .356 instead of .357. The reason being that 9mm is .355 and they split the difference so to speak. That being the case, accuracy with the 9mm could be a problem I would guess or at least a consideration.
