22-250 or .223 rifles
Hi I have shot both of the above rounds. my last 22-250 was a Ruger #1v I was impressed in it. I have also shot the .223 in an M16 M16A1 and M16a2 thruought the 12 years I spent in the Army. I am looking for another varmit rifle. I tend to shoot 450 yards and under I like the low kick of the 22-25. My quest for the next rifle in a nice varmit set up. I like to know if any one has shot the new carbon barrel rifles and how are they? I live in Indiana and my property overlooks a lower farm land and the coyoties are running across all day I own the land and no houses or cars to worry about. I like to know if any one has a good idea on a nice set up that they know of in the 22 cal class guns . I know i may of started the great debate by asking this question but hey i know some like certain brands but what I like to know is what works for you. Thanks so much

Might as well go with a 220 swift. That's one of the best as far as trajectory goes. I don't own one at the moment but have in the past and wish I'd never gotten rid of it. Just another instance of regreting selling a gun. Never again.

Guitardj took the words right out of my mouth... 220 Swift. The 22-250 is my personal second choice. It is available more often, and ammo is a little cheaper, but the 22-250 can be hotloaded to ALMOST the .220 Swift levels, but the Swift can be downloaded to 22-250 levels, and can be hotloaded to unbelievable levels. If I recall, they were able to push one up over 4,200 fps. If this is true, it would definately be at the expense of barrel life.
Back to the question between the .223 and the 22-250, the two guns you shot are vastly different, as is the cartridge. I'd only get a .223 if I got it in an AR variant, I personally wouldn't want a bolt gun in that chambering.
The carbon barrels, the only one I've used it with was a 10/22 and it was nice. It kinda sucked to shoot off-hand though because I personally shoot barrel-heavy guns better and it was too light up front. Prone however, I think it was as good as any other quality barrel.
I'd suggest the Remington VSSF in .220 Swift personally.

Buy the .22-250, they are much easier to find and feed. The difference in velocity between the two cartridges is minimal. The only way that the 220 Swift will reach 4200 fps is by useing a 40 grain bullet, which you really don't want to do. Compare the two useing 55 grain bullets which is more realistic. 0 -
ditto on the swift. I love mine. A factory 40gr load does over 4100fps, and we all know they are far from a max charge. The 40-45gr pills can be pushed wayyyy above 4200fps. The norma 50gr factory ammo leaves the dock at 4100fps. You can make a 55gr leave at 4000fps and get 8 reloades before the case is bad.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

i have owned both the 22-250 & 220 swift. i agree with the above postings regarding the 220 swift however if you want more punch down range i would at least consider the 6mm remington. i am very partial to this caliber as i use it exclusively for varmint/benchrest shooting.
220 swift/50gr sp/ft # energy at 400yrd=432/-16.7
6mm rem/100gr pp/ft # energy at 400yrd=983/-20.4
obviously the swift is a flatter shooting cartridge. you probably need to decide if you want punch or speed. dont forget that if you are shooting downhill as indicated, your poi will change.0 -

Personally I like common ammo that you can find most anywhere at reasonable prices ... I'd look at or build a heavy barreled AR, one with a stainless steel floated barrel ... for no further than your shooting the .223 is a great round ... they use it in AR type weapons at Camp Perry for 1000 yd matches and it has won many times ... for a hunting styled rifle the 22-250 will also give great service in a mild recoil. I like heavy fluted barrels so the 700 VSSF would be my choice.
One last thoght, and I'm suprised nobody has suggested it ... 25.06 or 260 rem ...

I thank you all for the advice. I have never shot a .220 swift Compaired to a 22-250 /.223 how is the recoil? I have a few 243,270,30-06,38-40,35 rem,30 rem,25-20,so I am looking to fill the void in to the 22 cal class. I like long range shooting I do like the 700vssf. The 6mm was a thought but I like a dream gun....one I can see the bullet hit thru the scope. I guess I just like watching the ground hogs/coytoites pop

220 swift and 22-250 are about equal in recoil. Very pleasant to shoot, but hard on the ears.

450 yds! 6mm or .243 would be my pick. Dream gun? Since you were in the service then I would suggest an Armalite AR - 10A4 SPRr (Special Purpose RifleTM), in .243 Winchester, with a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14x50mm Long Range M1,30mm tube,side focus scope.
