Building a custom Govt .45

I currently own a basic Springfield Armory Govt model 45 ACP. I have been thinking of purchasing a Kimber or Para-Ord 45 but also want to consider upgrading the pistol I already have. I have never built a 1911 45 before so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Here are a couple of questions that I have.

1. Are there any forums or websites that I should look at during my research?

2. Does anyone make a "kit" with all the parts for a basic upgrade?

3. In looking at Brownells website there are literally thousands of parts and upgrades that are possible. What upgrades/parts do I need to build a very accurate pistol?

4. I would like to do the work myself, is this possible or do I need to find a gunsmith?

5. Will it be any cheaper to build a gun or will I be better off buying a Kimber?

  One of the best investments you can make is Jerry Kuhnhausen's shop manuals, vol. I & II.
  
  Trigger kits are available from several suppliers, barrels also, spring kits, pin kits, etc.
  
  It is possible, and interesting, and educational, and fun to DIY. Whether it is productive depends on how you value your time. The first one I built from a bare GI slide and frame turned out to be a fine looking and fine shooting pistol, I learned a lot, had a lot of fun, and may have made as much as a dollar an hour...but I doubt it.[;)]

  Try www.americangunsmith.com The have a series of video tapes that
  are very good. Tells you what to do and what not to do. Several tapes are available depending how far you want to go.
  an execellent way to start.

  Layne Simpson wrote one of the best books on the subject. I would recommend that you very carefully consider all that you might want to do, budget it out, and then let a good gunsmith make the magic happen for you. A lot depends on whether you want a target/comp gun or a tactical gun. A match barrel carefully fitted will usually be the main accuracy component.
  
  FWIW, I spent a long time making up my mind as to what I wanted. It was well worth it.
