Barrel break in

I have heard lots of people talk about breaking in
their barrel with a 100 or so rounds. What is the purpose in
cleaning it between shots. I see no rational for that.

And how much will it close the group to break it in.
I am trying to get a better group out of an almost
    new springfield M1A.

Is there anything to coat the bullets with to polish
the barrel without buying the ridiculously expensive
firelapping stuff. I priced it around 50 or 75 bucks.

I am a benchrest shooter and have been for the last 8 years. Barrel break in is a touchy subject. There are 10,000 people with 10,000 ways to do it. Yes the point is to allow the bullet to remove the microscopic burs in the barrel. And yes even barrels from douglas, shilen, kreiger, and pac-nor have them. And yes you have to get it clean between shots. But the way I started doing my barrel breakins a few years ago works better than any method I had ever tried and it is cheaper too. I use a patch with JB borepaste in the barrel. Then I shoot it. If it is hard to get cleaned, I go back to the JB. For really bad barrels I use flitz metal polish. This will allow you to break in the barrel quicker and cheaper. And I find my barrels settle in and really start grouping faster than using the shoot clean shoot clean method. With the JB and the flitz you are doing the same thing the guys you pay mega bucks to have the barrel hand lapped. I, like everyone else love to shoot but with the price of ammo and components going up by the day I had to find a way to save money for other things like new rifles and optics. And this method works. For more info do a search for varmintal. He has a lot of in depth info on barrel break in. That is where I learned the method I now use.

welcome to America...now speak english or get the ****out
