I found this piece and don't know what I have as far as age or value. It says 38s+w ctg. serial number 256037. It is a 5 shot flip top.

There should be a roll-stamping along the top of the barrel stating the manufacture and a few dates. If not, it'll be tough to identify unless there's a S&W logo on the side.
If the cylinder is free to spin when the trigger/hammer are at rest, it's NOT a S&W.0 -
It could be a broken S&W.
But let's assume for the sake of argument that it IS a Smith & Wesson .38 Safety Hammerless (5th model). Very late production, say 1930's probably. You dont give us any clue what condition the gun is in, so value is a wild-assed guess. In typical condition, $150. As low as parts-content value, as much as $450 in new condition with box & papers.
