30-06 accelerator shells ?

I have been invited to go groundhog shooting, the guy who ask me to go told me to pick up a box of Accelerators for my 30-06,I didn't want to
act dumb so I just said OK.The girl at WALLMART sporting goods dept.didn't know either.
What are they?
How do they work?
Where can I get some?

    they are plastic sabots that hold a 55grn 223 bullet.
    winchester made them for awhile I don't know if they still do.
    you can get sabots to make your own.
    over 4000 fps in 3006.

    the term accelerator denotes the use of a discarding sabot submunition. typicly there is a segmented plastic hull/base wich holds a lesser caliber bullet firmly in a larger diameter case mouth. the two most common factory produced.30-06 accelerator loads are the 55gr and 88gr .22 cal. loads. a handloader would have an infinate number of bullet style/wieght/diameters to choose from.

    also found in other cartridges, most notably the .30-30, and the .50BMG. the net result is usualy a higher velocity, smaller/lighter bullet, and an improved useful range.

    Actually I dont think Winchester made accelerators, they were made by Remington.
    They made them in 30-30, .308, and 30-06. I have some of them in .308, and 30-06.
    Accelerators are not made any more, so you likely wont have much luck finding them in a gun store.
    I have seen them from time to time here on the auction, but they are not cheap.
    You might be better off using a .223 for your trip. They a much cheaper, and easier to find.

    we have several varieties/calibers/wieghts of accelerator ammunition at the shop. we are also capable of loading our own to almost any specification. there were enough made that most ammo catalog outfits still have them in stock (ammo depot, OWS, etc...) if its a "must have" item, and you cannot locate them elsewere, email me at waltsgun@aol.com and i will see if i can scrounge up/load up what you need. tell them big mike sent you.

    You'd have to sight your rifle in with them too. Assuming you can find them. And asking a perfectly valid question is not "dumb". It's a very good thing. Accelerators wouldn't be my first choice in any case. Your .22 will do just fine. And if the guy says anything, you don't want to hunt with him anyway. Hunting is about the joy of spending time with friends. Nothing else matters.

    Accelerators were not good on accuracy either thats probably what killed them.

    RT, Laredo is correct. I was under the impression that the '06 version was still being made, but I don't focus too much on current trends in commercial ammo. The sabots are readily available if you want to make your own - I have a buddy who sells them in bulk at the cheapest rates I know. However, Bolthandle is also correct that the loads are not known for pinpoint accuracy. The design was part marketing gimmick, part an effort to give .30 caliber rifles the capability to serve as a half-***ed varmint weapon if that was the only thing available at the time (akin to a bird hunter carrying a few slugs "just in case" when afield during deer season). They've never sold too well. As for varmint hunting, the high power / longer range doesn't compensate for their lack of accuracy IMHO; at the ranges where they would be effective, a quality .22 rimfire would do the job, especially if it is in .22 WMR.

    OK, You guys have talked me out of the accelerator thing. The only other rifle I own is a Marlin model 60 .22 with no scope.
    My friend says we will be shooting 200-500 yards on his parents farm.
    He also said there is not much use going until they cut the hay fields, so that gives me a couple of weeks to come up with an alternative.
    I hate to lug along a useless rifle and I dont want to turn down the invitation,I love to shoot,and besides he's kinda Cute!
    My 30-06 with a 4X scope is sighted at 100yds with Remington 180gr. shells.
    What reasonably accessable ammunition would be my best choice for the type of shooting I'm in for?

    The accelerater ammo is still on the market but probably a special order at most shops. The accuracy issue is not as big a problem as it's made out to be. You should get about the same groups as with 110 grain bullets. Some guys expected to get 22-250 groups out of their abused and neglected deer rifle. It just didn't happen. I found that a totally clean barrel coated with a moly or other friction reducing product delivered adequate accuracy for 250 yard shooting. The factor here is recoil. I can hit further with good 30/06 loads but the sabot loads don't beat me up. It's trade off.
