AK upper hand guard removal?

How do you remove the wood from the gas tube on the upper handguard of an Egyptian Maadi? I am having a hell of a time getting that thing off.

I want to sand the wood and finish it to match the other parts. I also want to re-finish the metal. What is the best way to get the old paint off and what is the best way to finish it...what kind of paint?

  Take off the gas tube. Get a pair of lock jaw pliers. At the back of the tube where it locks into the sight housing you will see that it has two flat sides. Adjust the pliers to hold the tube at that point. Grab a hold of the wood, preferably by hand. If it is really tight you can use a padded vise, but I have found usally a hand is the best and safest way. Rotate the wood around the tube 180 degrees using the tube as the axis. Once you have rotated the 180, you can simply pull the wood off the tube. To re-attach, simply reverse the process. LRARMSX@MCHSI.COM

  This is definately not an expert opinion & I haven't tried this. I've heard of a lot of guys using grill paint, as in Webber grill, on their guns.
