question about silencers
hello,
in buying a silencer, what all parts do you need, do you just need the silencer itself and then work on the gun to fit it, or do you need another part, sortof an adapter. I really have no idea about this so if you could help me out, it would be great, thanks a lot,

Silencers screw on the outside of the barrel so you need a barrel that is longer than the slide. They do not work on revolvers because to much sound escapes through the cylinder gap. you also have to stick with sub sonic ammo because the slug breaking the sound barrier is a lot of the noise you hear in the faster calibers. The mackarov or ppk with extended threaded barrels work good..... 0 -
So, a gun like a beretta 92f (the 9mm version, or any of that model) is an example of the extended threads? Also, is there any sort of adapters to put on the barrel, or do you have to get the end of the barrel fitted with screw threads?

In Europe, you are almost expected to use a silencer when hunting- it's almost a breach of etiquette to make so much noise.
I'm pretty sure that if you went to your local hunting shop/gun store; you'd be able to see and play with several types for lots of different guns and sort of make up your own mind about which is heavier, needs liquids, etc., as well as asking about degrading accuracy/back pressure.
Most suppressors (they never really do "silence" any noise- rather a sonic expansion chamber-effect)have screw-on attachment; though the newer ones have a sort of quick-release. Look at the AWC or Sionics brands if you can; they're top shelf stuff!

theres one problem, I'm not from europe, and i cant speak this language too well, (finnish) I will also be going back to my home country soon where things like this are much more expencive and hard to come by.

No, you need to REPLACE the barrel with a longer one that is threaded on the end. I don't recall the thread pitch, but it is standard; all silencers have a matching female thread.
I have fired a suppressed Beretta 92 in 9mm, and was not impressed. It was still pretty loud, and I couldn't aim at a target because the suppressor extended above the sights. Oh, and the slide wouldn't function because of the decreased back pressure; you need to buy a replacement recoil spring & "tune" the gun. Doesn't sound like much fun, does it?

i am looking for one for a .308cal and a .22cal. If you were getting a silencer for a rifle, how would you go about threading the barrel?

I have an Austrian Voere 22LR rifle that has a silencer. Actually the silencer was bought for my Walther. The Voere barrel has an external thread and the front sight has been removed. I needed to have an adapter made as the Walther and Voere threads are not the same. Depending on the sight placement on the barrel, this might be a problem and require a scope. The actual threading shouldn't be a big deal unless the barrel is not cylindrical for the last few inches of it's length. Remove the barrel and take it to a machine shop to have the thread lathe cut. I may be missing something here and if I have my buds will be more and happy to correct me!

If you are even considering the idea of purchasing a suppressor in Finland (where they are much less expensive) and importing it into the United States you can forget all about it. Private individuals are not allowed to import silencers or any other National Firearms Act weapons. Only a Licensed importer who is also a special occupational tax payer would be allowed to import a silencer and even then it would be restricted to law enforcement sales. Perhaps I mis read your intentions.

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought your were going home to Finland. If it's the other way Mark sure is right. You would probably make the national news by trying to bring a silencer into this country. Not to be nosey but why do you want one at all? They have little practical everyday value and are quite expensive. Then there is the $200. fed. stamp thing. Sure, I have one but I enjoy impractical things nowdays!

just to throw a wrench into things : there is a russian revolver that can be silenced. i can't seem to remember the name but i do recall that the cylinder floats forward when cocked to take up the gap between the cylinder and barrel. 0 -
Here are the websites I was given with info on suppressors. www.soundmoderators.co.uk and www.jacksonrifles.com they are the same site I think but they give a lot of information on the subject.
