whats the best way to remove a crappy finish?
I have an AK that I want to refinish and I'm looking for the best way to remove the nasty finish that it has. It looks like it was sprayed using cheap spray paint and I want to refinish it. I don't have any sand blasting equipment, so thats out of the question. By the way...i'm looking to re-finish the metal...I have the wood under control.
also...whats the best finish to use when its time to do it up again?

Refinishing the Metal can be done in a lot of ways. It depends on what exactly you want for a result when done. If you are looking to have a Extremely Shiny Finish, you are looking at a lot of preparation of the metal. Semi Flat and Flat Finishes cover many defects and that means you don't have to literally "polish" out the metal to a mirror shine before sealing it.
If it were me and it was my AK, here's what I'd do. I would get some 0000, (pronounced "four-ought"), steel wool at the Home Depot, along with some 400 grit Sandpaper. Use the sandpaper to smooth off the real rough spots, then blend the edges and completely go over all the remaining paint with the steel wool until I got it as smooth as I wanted. Wipe off all sanding dust with a lint free rag with solvent or thinner. Then, spraying very light coats even to the point of it taking two or three coats to fully "color" the metal, Using ONLY, "KRYLON Semi-Flat Enamel," coating the complete gun 5 or 6 times until the color was even and do a final finish coat. Let dry between coats following the directions on the can.
Krylon Semi-Flat Enamel spray paint is what is used by The UZI manufacturers and many others to duplicate the black semi-flat painted finishes on the "Evil Black guns!" I think you would find this very satisfactory.
It is not necessary to completely remove all the paint on the metal now unless you are going for a mirror gloss finish. In fact, it acts as a "filler" and when smoothed off, makes a great base to work from eliminating the need for a "primer" coat. Good Luck and let me know how it turns out! I think you'll be pleased!

Thank you very much for your help. I was hoping it would be something so simple as that. I have a one track mind and now that i started on this, I can't start another project...and I already have one in mind that I want to get to.
I'll hopefully get started on it this weekend and I will definetely keep everyone in the loop as to the progress...hopefully I'll get some pictures of it along the way and post them for all to see.
