Colt Pocket Nine
A fellow just offered one to me for sale. I'm not much of a compact semi auto guy, but after a quick browse on here I see that they've been going for well over 500.00.
He wants 400 for it (used, great shape but no box), and I'm wondering if the prices that I see on the auction side are a recent development, or if I can expect this to hold some value for the future.

Not very long at all.
Very reliable.
Function is DA only.
Accuracy is good enough for close range defense.
Value? Outrageous.

I ended up getting it for $375 out the door. Based on what I have seen for online auction prices, I think I did OK. I have always wanted a 9mm in that size rather than a 380. The trigger needs to be slicked up, the slide release needs to be dehorned, and I don't really care for the grips, but other than that, it seems like a neat little package. Can't wait to shoot it. The gun shop also had a factory mag for $30. I'll go back and get it if I really like the way the gun performs.
Is it +P or +P+ rated? Any sources for grips? Is there a spring kit for it, or does it have to be gunsmith tuned?0 -
The Pocket Nine is a classic example of a gun that wouldn't sell when it was introduced, but sells beyond its value now that it is discontinued (see 'Double Eagle' for another Colt example). I believe it was made 1998-99 only, or maybe just 1999. You did well on the price.
To me, the gun is too sharp and the DA is too clunky. It might be OK if you get a gunsmith to clean it up and radius some knife-edges.

I agree partially with CGS. The Pocket Nine began with the idea that the Pony Pocketlite .380 could be chambered in 9x19 with minor modifications. That would have meant a 13 or 14-ounce 9x19 pistol and would have been a very successful as a very small 9x19 pistol with a famous name. However, Colt, like many other manufacturers could not get the desired durability out of the Pony/9x19 and increased the size and weight to get a desired level of durability. That then meant the Pocket Nine weighed 17 ounces and was about the size of a Kel-Tec P11. I suppose that people would be upset if a pistol had a short service life, but I would gladly have accepted a shorter service life to get a Pony-sized pistol in 9x19.
Let me see, do I want a $500 9x19 pistol that holds 6+1 or a $250 pistol the about same size and weight that holds 10+1? That killed the Pocket Nine, along with Colt's troubles in the late 1990s. That also made the Pocket Nine a somewhat rare collector's item, made only in 1999 as I recall. To steal one for $375 is unusual, as most go for over $500.0 -
OK, I might have fudged a little on the price; It was actually $378.88, and no, I would not pay $500+ for the gun, but at 378.88 it was kinda hard to pass up for the 4 magic letters C O L T compared to similar guns on the market. I have had the Mustang 380 but had a hard time reliably shooting it; I would always accidently push on the mag release, causing it to not feed properly. The Pocket Nine mag release does not get in my way. I think the 380 Govt (is that what you call it, or Mustang plus??) size would be nice in 9mm Single Action. I'll find out soon how much I can live with this gun. I have not had the guts yet to completely strip down the gun to see how the innards work. This looks like one of those guns you stay up till 3am trying to get it back together and end up leaving on the doorstep of you gunsmith with a note to call you when it gets back together. 0 -
I have 4 of them, Wife likes it, but did not like the grips. VERY hard to find! Hogue made the grips and does not have any now. But I did find some. Took and cut off the finger groovs from the sides, made it smaller and the wife likes it better.. Mags are ez to find NEW. Dont pay over $30.00 for them. Other parts, Well.... Colt may have some, I called them and it's just the parts that were made for the PONEY, and POCKET NINE, that will interchange..... Do you have a Manual? If not I can scan it and send it to you. [^]

You stole it at that price. I would pay that unit price and take a dozen of them right now.
Did it only come with one magazine? All of them I have seen offered for sale only come with one. I think Colt provided them with two, but the resellers are scamming off the extra to sell separately.
I have the Pony Pocketlite and love it. I would love it more if it was a more potent caliber.
My next hideout gun is going to be a Pocket Nine or the new Kel-Tec .380.
