Ammo For Breaking In Barrel

You've pretty much answered your own question-any ammo will work to break in a barrel as long as it leaves the barrel.
Lotsa people have differing ideas as to how, exactly one breaks in a barrel, so I'll let you know my favorite method.
Fire 3 shots in no less than 5 minutes-aimed, off a rest, into the ground, it doesn't matter. Thoroughly clean the barrel with Hoppe's Benchrest and clean patches until after 15 minutes or so, a clean dry patch comes out clean & dry.
Run a lightly oiled patch down the bore for lube, and fire 3 more rounds. Repeat the cleaning process.
Do this for an afternoon or two using about 1-200 rounds, followed by the cleanings, then shoot for group.
Not tight enough? Wipe the bore with Hoppe's, smear about a matchheads' worth of JB's Bore Cleaning Paste on a clean patch, work it into the patch, put patch on a fairly tight jag and run it back and forth about 10 times without the patch leaving the bore, "rinse" the bore with more Hoppe's on a clean patch, followed by a clean patch on the same jag.
Shoot for group again. Nice, no?

No proof to the moly break in rumor. I broke in my 220 swift this year with moly bullets, and it shoots/cleans great. Besides,...if you are using the shoot and clean, shoot and clean, shoot and clean, method, then no moly will be left in the barrel anyway.

Just break it in, that's the important point. And yes, you can use any jacketed bullet to break it in. What I do is to buy 5-6 boxes of different premium ammunition, and break it in while I shoot each different ammo. this way, you are figuring out what ammo it likes to shoot, while you are breaking it in. That saves barrel life and time. Shooting it just to clean it makes no sense,.....kill two birds with the same stone.[8D][:D]

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Carve what C said in stone.

Be siteing in the scope, Comparing loads. Just don't run bullets down any barrel for no purpose.

One of my best shooting 243s was broke in with Miss Molly coating the barrel. A Howa sporter. It shot .340 for the first three rounds. Now it shoots 3.765" at 600 yards. Yes, It is a out of the box Howa Sporter

Thanks all for the advice. I don't have the scope yet, and I was just anxious to get going. I guess it won't kill me to be a little patient.
