I would say basically whatever anyone is willing to pay for it. I know it sounds dumb...but you really can't tell basing it on the asking prices of some of the auctions.
I would browse the auction sites and see what the highest price is that anyone has actually bid...then knock off a couple of bucks and that would be a decent price.

As a cartridge collector, I can tell you that most of *us* don't consider the dark bullet rifle rounds to be "Black Talon." A lot of people try to sell them as such, but it's BS. The answer to your question is as pikeal1 suggested - whatever some gullible individual is willing to pay. 0 -

Now you've got my curiousity up. What are those Black Boxed Rifle Bullets that are marked on the box, "Winchester Black Talon" if they aren't "Black Talons?" Also, the 1993 Winchester Catalog shows pictures of several different Calibers of "Black Talon Rifle" ammo. Is this something else, also? If so, what?

I was wondering the same thing... I have a single box of .300 win mag black talons. I understand they are much more rare than most (but I could have been misled too).

I have been told that when Winchester "pulled Black Talon Hand Gun Ammo" off the shelf, they left the Black Talon Rifle ammo. However, I was also told, they redesigned the Boxes for the Rifle ammo, and called them "Supreme" instead of removing the ammo, they only changed the name and distributed the newly named Supreme Ammo which was the replacement for the Black Talon Rifle Ammo. Sales of the Black Talon Rifle ammo removed the ammo from the Public's view and the replacement ammo, "Supreme" was named more "Politically Correct."
Since then, when there was only Four different Black Talon rifle calibers, (.30-06, .308, .300 Win. Mag., and .338 Win. Mag.), they have added additional calibers to the "New" Supreme line of rifle cartridges, but the cartridges still look like the original Black Talon Rifle cartridges, Black Bullet in a Shiny Nickel plated case, but Called Winchester Supreme instead. So, it seems to me if they came in a box labeled "Black Talon," they would be Black Talons. If the box was labeled as "Winchester Supreme," even though the cartridges may be identical, they would be Supreme brand instead. Looks like you could keep your Black Talon box full, even though you were shooting the cartriges by refilling the Black Talon box with the Supreme cartridges and throwing the Supreme Box away.......

Ranchero, I think you are mostly right. However, they didn't *change* the name of rifle bullets to Supreme. I am looking at my box of .300 win mag black talons and on the box it says "black talon", "supreme", and "FS Fail Safe". The new ammo is marketed typically under the Fail Safe nomenclature.

Notice how the rifle stuff is packaged differently from the pistol stuff. This guy is likely selling fail safe's as black talons since he won't sell the box with it.

bambihunter, The collectors set I was selling IS the ORIGINAL BLACK TALON ammo. EVERY BULLET in EVERY CALIBER of the set, was ORIGINAL BLACK TALON from the BLACK TALON BOX!!! This was not FAIL SAFE or SUPREME! The boxes were not included due to the fact I had several bullets of each caliber left in ea. box! Don't make accusations based on what you think may be the case.[V] Look at the pictures! BLACK TALON boxes mean the real BLACK TALON ammo! I have an excellent rating on my sales, and you don't get this by misrepresenting what your selling![:D]! If you notice, the FAIL SAFE and SUPREME ammo boxes state just that, FAIL SAFE and Supreme, in the lower left front of the box! NOT BLACK TALON!! 0 -
When Winchester "pulled" the Black Talon Hand Gun Ammo off the Dealer's shelves, they changed the Rifle Black Talon Box markings by removing he name, "Black Talon" and leaving "Supreme" and "Fail Safe" and it seems the cartridges remained the same. I would think without the box stating "Black Talon" it would be very difficult to determine without a shadow of doubt whether the cartridge was an Original "Black Talon." Of course, it would be a little easier if the Cartridges were one of the "Original" four Calibers, .308, .30-06, .300 Win Mag, or .338 Win Mag, but you couldn't be sure on these either without the box.
I doubt Bambihunter was trying to say anyone was doing anything wrong or "shady" but was only pointing out what I said above. The entire Black Talon "thing" is really only a figment of the Media's imagination anyway! The "Replacement" ammo for these is and remains ballistically the same or better than the Black Talons.
If you "need" Black Talons,....Get Some! I've got Mine!!!!

rte71, I'm sorry, it did come across as a little harsh. I didn't mean it quite how it sounded. Yes, my main point was that "Fail-Safe", Supreme, and "Black Talon" are all essentially the same thing, epecially in rifle calibers. I have in my hand a box of .300 mag Black Talon's and a box of .300 mag Fail Safe's and while they dropped the "Black Talon" name off of the box, other than that I can't tell the difference by the loaded cartridges. I do also know that when I used to shoot Black Talon's then when they pulled them I went to Fail-Safe's and didn't have to change my zero or anything. They shot identical.
