74 Wood ?
Hi Guys: (I cleaned up my newly accquired purchase of the $30. Winchester 74 with the Hoppes No 9, as you suggested, and it worked super! The pitting was not as bad as it looked. It still has some of the blue left and it did give it some patina.) Now on to the wood.
What are your suggestions here? It appears that it was varnished with a brush at some point in its life. The wood looks good, no cracks or bad dings. Strip it with paint remover? Sand it? varnish it? Or leave it? I more than likley will trade it up to something better so I would like to increse the value if I can. It sure looks better with the metal clean. Thanx

It's only worth about $150. I'd strip it(varnish remover, not paint remover. Ain't the same thing.)and re-oil it with tung oil or Boiled Linseed oil.
Nothing you can do will increase its value other than what you're doing. If it's mechanically sound, keep it. (There are several obsolete parts sites that mention the 74.) You can use cold bluing to make in prettier but shoot it before you decide if you're going to sell it. You may find it shoots too well to sell.0
