AR-15 Concerns...
Hi. I bought a Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle today. We just got back from sighting it in and I've got a question for all of you. The first 50 rounds or so were nice. After that, I noticed a metallic sound during each fire which was the spring around the bolt coming back to bring in a new shell. Should I be hearing that spring sound or not? Is this just a natural sound while breaking in the gun from it's new status? Thanks for any input you can provide...

That sound is normal. It is the spring that is behind the buffer. The bolt carrier in recoil pushes back on the buffer which compresses the spring.
If you open the gun, depress the little pin that holds the buffer assy in the stock. Let the buffer come out, but be careful, it is under spring tension. Then remove the spring and put a light coat of gun grease on it with your fingers. That should quiet it down.0 -

Good advise from lefty. The AR family of rifles tend to be a little noisey if not properly greased and oiled. By the way, The AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle. Assualt rifles are select fire, full auto and/or burst fire. Your rifle is a SEMI-AUTO version of the military
combat weapon, ie, the M-16A1,2&3. I don't mean to preach,but, The misuse of that particular term was instrumental in passage of the ASSUALT WEAPONS ban and all the stupidity that came with it.0 -

Python is OH so right, about the proper nomenclature and classification of a firearm, I`ve goten into it with my ATF field Rep. and our state Rep many many times...as far as the AR15 spring noise, the advise the guys gave is the best, or you can invest in a hydrolic buffer.....Have fun with the rifle.[8D]
