S&W Model 39-2
I just purchased an S&W Model 39-2. Since this pistol is 30 or 40 years old will it handle the 9mm +P rounds? The pistol itself is in a like new condition.

John.... Yes the model 39 can handle 9mm +p, but I would not use any foreign 9mm as some of it toooo hot ,(made for subguns). Also the foreign ammo is not necessarily made to SAAMI specs. For practice I would stick to regular 9mm, and save the +p stuff for protection or carry ammo.
The first 927 model 39's were made with a steel frame, after that they went to the alloy frame. Since yours is a 39-2 it has the alloy frame.0 -
Also stay away from the Blazer aluminum case ammo. My 39-2 will shoot anything with 100% reliability, but put in some CCI blazer ammo and it turns into a Jennings. 0 -
The story about submachinegun ammo being too hot is a hoax. There was never a hotter 9mm load made just for machineguns. European (read German) ammo was loaded to hotter specs than U.S. ammo but they used this in their pistols, too. Military surplus 9mm from Europe will be loaded hotter than commercial ammo but I never had any trouble with it in any of my guns and have never heard of any warnings from gun makers or other reliable sources to avoid it. The commercial ammo companies have to keep their pressures low enough to be safe in old, junk guns. The military assumes the guns will be in good condition and loads the ammo to the levels it was designed to be at. Any Smith and Wesson gun should handle European military ammo without a problem.
