HK MP5 ser#
Is there a difference between the serial #s (special
pre-fix, etc.) on a class3 full-auto MP5 and the civilian
version semi-auto carbine(HK 94)? Also, once the receiver has been
registered as full auto can the full-auto parts be removed/
destroyed and the gun reverted back to a legal non-class 3 HK94
item(assuming it is pre-94 and you put a 16" barrel on)?
Please, I would appreciate it if the "just my .02 cents crowd"
leaves this post alone as I am looking for serious and

There is no difference. A serial # is unique, be it on a machine gun or a standard firearm. When a semi-auto was converted to a full auto the serial # was registered with the physical description of the gun. Once a machine gun always a machine gun. The registration can not be reversed. This is my understanding of the class III regs.

Once an NFA firearm is manufactured and registered, it cannot be unregistered unless it is reported as destroyed. To be 'destroyed' the receiver must be torch cut, crushed or otherwise rendered unusable to ATF specifications.

Why in the world would you want to make a NFA registered $10,000 MP5 full auto into a $2,000 semi auto, if it will even be worth that!
Sell the NFA MP5 for $10grand & buy you 5 of the semi's!

Madness it sounds like you are thinking across two different types of HK machinegun conversions. If the receiver itself is registered than it continues to be a machinegun and there is really no legal way to remove any parts or components and change it into a semi automatic. If on the other hand the conversion was performed with what is termed a "registered sear" (actually a sort of friction catch) then the sear itself it the machinegun and the firearm is simply a host for the sear. In the case of the registered sear it is quite easy to remove the sear and there by allow the firearm to revert back to semiauto. The sear can then be sold or simply moved over to another host firearm. I agree with Walte, why would you want to do convert a registered machinegun to semi automatic? The prices these registered MG's bring are enormous!

I agree, you can convert a full auto to a semi without much trouble. Every firearm that is serialized is usually unique to that particular "gun" and even if you were to go and try to convert a semi auto to full auto that is illegal because of the BATFE registration and tax stamp etc...would be "registered" to that firearm by serial number of course. 0 -
Your ATF says 'once a machinegun always a machinegun'. So the answer is no. There are lots of guys who have had M-14 receivered semi-auto rifles confiscated for this reason. 0 -
I will throw my .05cents in ( with inflation ). I agree why in the world put it back to semi.. however if it has a sear as suggested it must have a 16" barrel to go along with it. I would be very interested in buying you a Brand new HK-94 semi, and paying for all transfer fees for you MP-5. 0 -
Everyone wants to know WHY I would even consider this...
Let's just say my employers want to give me one ( yes it is a transferrable pre-86) as a retirement gift but they are as uneasy about transferring a subgun to a civilian as I an about dealing with the hassles. I suppose I'll just ask for a watch instead!0 -
Unless these guys are going to come across with a $10,000 Rolex, you'd be much better off with the MP-5...and even then, Rolex won't go up in value like that MP-5 will! If you live in a "free" state the transfer process is not nearly so complicated that it would cause you to pass up such a fine gift. If you still want a semi, You can always take advantage of offers such as Select-fire's; there are PLENTY of guys who would be more than happy to give you a brand new HK-94 semi in exchange for removing you from the "burden" of machinegun ownership. I'd be happy to help you out on this myself, but California does not allow dealers to own transferable MG's, we are only allowed restricted sales sample to use for law enforcement sales demonstrations and private ownership is prohibited.

I would throw in a fine Seiko watch with your companies engraving on it.
That would be a 4500 semi Hk 94 and a $500 watch allowance for your companies pre 86 MP 5. Transfer to my Class 3 dealer I pay all paperwork and transfer fees. My email is in members forum.0
