I would say go for the 22. I don't think the 17HMR will do too well in a 2" barrel. I'm surprised they even offer a 17HMR in a 2" barrel.

I don't think that you are price sensative due to the fact that you looking at 17HMR. Ammo for 22lr is anywhere from $.79 to $10 for a box of 50. But really, you are probably in the $2 to $3 range for good 22lr ammo. 17HMR is $10 a box.

If you are recoil sensative, have you considered a 22Mag? How about a 38 special with wadcutters? Lightweight guns have more "kick" than heavier guns.

You will probably get all types of responses as to what is the best defense gun. Personally, I would not want to stand in front of any gun.

    rballi,

Thanks for your input! You've hit some of my question points for sure. Here's some more things I was considering.......

As for the self defense value of the gun, I agree with your statement about not being fool enough to stand in front of ANY gun. And if my customer wants a .22 or a .454 I'll talk over benefits/disadvantages and they pick from there.

Also, the S&W 317, weighing in at 10.5 ozs., sure goes easy on adding weight to your pocket, purse, whatever. That's why I want the weight of the Taurus 2" .17HMR as a comparison......

Finally, you started to address the performance of the .17HMR in a 2" barrel. I really wonder if the powder even gets a chance to burn and if the .17 has any better punch than a .22 or a velocity increase over the .22 that makes it a better choice!?

    Thanks again,

    Jim

    22lr .
when you got a short stroke you need a big piston.
lite bullets are more efficient in short barrels
