Colt SUPER ELITE Super 38
This is a GOLD CUP NATIONAL MATCH SUPER ELITE COLT SUPER 38 #SExxx. I'm told by Colt it is a special edition by the SE in the serial number. One of 700 made with production date of 1977. It has a blued slide and stainless frame, adjustable sites and checkered wood grips. It is in 95-98% condition, with the box and all paper work. They would not set a price but said it was quite valuable. Similar guns are listed at $1,100.00. Can anyone come up with a figure? I may list it for sale.

First of all, I need to confirm some features. Is this gun a "70" Series without the firing pin safety? Does it have a firing pin safety? Besides being told by Colt there was "700" made in 1977, are you sure that date is correct? Is there anything in the paperwork or markings on the gun to indicate if it is "Number XX of 700?"
During the Mid to Late 70's, Colt manufactured numerous "Commemorative" guns, which are a breed of their own. The only gun I am able to even come close to would be a "Special Edition" gun by Accu-Sports, but it had a Stainless Slide and a Blue Frame....just the opposite of what you are describing. Need more information to work with to determine what it might be.
If it is a "strictly Commemorative" gun, or a "Special Edition" made for some Group or Organization, that would have a large bearing on its possible value. See what you can find in the paperwork with it and post it here.

I'm not that informed on 1911s. I'm told it is a 70 series. it does have a small spring loaded plunger type firing pin safety? It doesn't say # of to indicate number made and doesn't say commemerative, it is only a three digit serial number with the prefix SE. I also could only find stainless slide and blued frame guns listed. The original purchaser owned a gun shop and has passed away. The year 1977 as indicated by Colt would be in the prime of his business history. I can email the pictures to you, my email is kevinsshop@hotmail.com .

The Combat Elite began life in 1987 in .45 acp only. Colt then made a "Special Edition" of the Combat Elite in .38 Super and gave it a Rollmark indicating "Super Elite" instead of "Combat Elite" like on the .45 acp. This limited series of some 700 guns began the Combat Elite to be made in two calibers, .45 acp and .38 Super, although it was a year or two later when the guns were identical except for caliber.
Value wise, these are very under priced in the Blue Book of Gun Values in my opinion, but there is also a great deal of variation in prices on a regional basis that must be considered. Use the Blue Book as a "Guide" and check for sold guns on Auction Sites to determine the "real value" which is what they sold for. Good Luck!
