old powder horns

I have had,for many years,two powder horns.I am interested in selling them.One is plain with no cap on small end,the other in carved extensively with mexican logo and 1800,s date.Can e-mail pictures.Any info,books,or buyers that I can get would be appreciated

  Suggest you get them appraised by somebody reputable. There are lots of copies out there and some outright fakes. It'll give you an idea what they're worth.

  Sunray is right, you need to get them appraised. Genuine old horns, particularly the eastern long hunter horns can be very valuable. Western and trade horns less so. And sadly, as Sunray points out, there are reproductions and fakes as with many other things. There are a couple of books on horns, but neither suggests values.

  Best source for info on powder horns is The Powder Flask Book by Ray Riling. Nice first editions are going for $40-$50, but I think it recently went into a new printing and those should be much cheaper. Should give you some notions about what you have.

  If you can post some pictures of the horns, I can let a person that I know see them. He can tell a lot about horns because he makes many. He can antique them so that they look 100s of years old so he does know his horns. As others stated, there are quite a few so called fakes out there. Better yet if you could e-mail me some pictures. If they are geniune then they are worth a good bit. If there is someone in your area that can appraise them then it is a good idea to have them appraised. The plain horn would be something that I would be interested in. As to the other one I would suggest contacting the NMLRA for their links. Their addresss is NMLRA.org and they should have links to some powder horn dealers. If you are close to Friendship, IN. in June the NMLRA has a spring shoot at the Walter Cline Range and there will be experts of all kinds there dealing with anything black powder. I will also look and see if I have Ken Scott's address and John Curry's as well. They could help you in this matter. Also look at historicaltrekking.com at their links and post the question on their message board. Blue Heron Mercantile also has a message board and links that might be helpful. Search for Blue Heron on line because I cannot remmember their URL. Jim Jacobs is the owner and he knows a lot about horns as well as who to direct you to if he doesn't know. Good luck.
