In market for a good scope for me PSS
Hello. I was looking in to getting some good scope for my REM PSS in .308. So far I fitted it with BSA classic 3-12-50. Is this scope good? What should I look for when shopping for scope? How much do I have to spend to get a good, solid scope? Form your experience which scopes are good. Considering a price range 100-400 an up, and range of models Its hard to make a choice, Maybe a fellow shooter could help me make a right one
Thanks Mark

To much scope for a .308. Mind you, if that's what you have...
It also depends on what you're using the rifle for. For hunting a 2.5-8 will do. A Bushnell Scopechief or any similar scope. And it won't cost you a ton of money. A surf to Cabela's site will give you a ballpark figure. http://www.cabelas.com/
All you really need for hunting with a .308 is a 4X scope, but the 2.5-8 gives you a bit more versatility. 3x-9x will do.
Have a look here for a lesson on scopes in general. http://www.bushnell.com/productinfo/riflescopes/techtalk.html#types0 -
No such thing as too much scope. If your closest shots will be over 100yds, then a scope that only goes down to 6 or 8 power at the least, will make any shot you need but will provide the higher power range for long range shots. If you plan on shooting no more than a few hundred yards, then a 2-10 or 3-9 will be plenty. Me persoanly, I want at least 16x or better at the high end.
Look at Burris Signature series for the $400-$500 range
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Well usually JustC and I agree, but I will disagree on this one. Burris Signature for sure, the Leupold, then Nikon. In my opinion those are the top 3 scopes without getting into European glass and Euro dollar prices. I tend to use either fixed 4x or 6x and more often lower range variables, such as 1.75-6x. I also avoid objective bells above 44mm because the really big bells require higher scope mounts which lifts my cheek to much for good sighting. I hunt javelina/deer/elk in the southwest, but unlike JustC I don't hunt varmints and don't try (much less make!) 400-600 yard shots. Select a quality scope designed for the hunting perameters you actually encounter. Barsness wrote a really good book on hunting optics. 0 -
You'll do both if you can get over hear during the crop damage permits season (now-mid sept)[;)][:D] Bring a rifle and a fishing rod.
