Beating a dead horse?

I may be dreaming but I seem to remember a thread here stating one could build a 1911 for about $200. I was looking at the Shotgun News and saw parts (frames, slides barrels etc). best price I could come up with was about $350. And of course the all perplexing question is who makes these parts, what kind of quality, and what would you call this firearm.

  If you got REAL lucky with some used parts, you MIGHT get it under $250. A used Essex frame MIGHT only bring $75. A used Essex or a Brazilian slide is $40-$50. YOu MIGHT find a used barrel someplace, for $30.The rest of the (probably minimal quality) parts might possibly be had, now and then, for $100 or a bit less. The best prices are Sarco's, but their extractor, hammer, sear need to be either case hardened or replaced, because they are soft.

  i saw some cheap 45 kits on www.gunsnstuff.net i don't remember he specs at all, but they might be worth checking out if you just wanna mess around and experiment with them. who knows, they might kick some butt. good luck, cody

  I pick up odd parts at gunshows that can be used to build Government models. For example, I bought an Essex frame a couple of years ago for $45 that needed refinishing, a Colt 70 series slide that had been refinished and cut for Bomar sights for $30, used Colt barrels for $20. I am always looking thru people's junk boxes for odd bits and pieces. A dealer sold me a Clark Match barrel for $30 that someone had made a mess of trying to fit it to a Gold Cup Colt. I was able to clean it up and by using it with a Group Gripper kit, I have been able to make a really accurate setup. You can build some good guns on the cheap if work at it.

  "what would you call this firearm?" I'd call it bubba, but that's just me. The quality depends on the quality of the parts and of the workmanship put into it. Prices of parts etc. are very dependant on where you are.
