remington would be my top choice. if your shots will be inside of 250 yards, the .223 is an excellent choice. outside of 250 yards, go for the 22-250. you will probably want more range when you become "addicted", i would select the 22-250, it's a fine varmint caliber.

waiting stinks, but use the .243 for now and wait to get the savage. Use the money saved for good optics, and go 22-250 as you'll want the added range once you "get into" the sport of prairie dog shooting.

Don't forget the barn-burning .220 Swift round... They offer it in a very sweet VSSF model, but I don't know if they offer that version for southpaws. I still prefer the Remington's over the Savage, but I am looking foward to trying out thier new trigger.
In all honesty, if your .243 is a heavy-barrelled gun, I'd just use it on a permanite basis. If it is sporter weight, then I'd opt for the 22-250 or .220 Swift. Some of the guys have raved over the 6mm rem, which sounds like a .243, but 1/4" longer case.

Two part answer. One, surplus .223 ball is not the ammo you want in that rifle. Yes, it's cheap, but itis NOT accurate enough. You need to use carefully loaded handloads to get the best accuracy anyway. Two. The only question is the price and your "wanna". You want it 'now' or do you want to wait. The quality is the same. "prairie dogs" don't care what hits them. "prairie dogs" only or deer or what?
"...I want..." is incredibly important though.

I have a Rem 700 VLS in .243 and a Savage .223 with the accutrigger. Both are great guns but I agree with dantheman, get the savage and save your dough for some better glass. The Savage isn't quite as nice as the Remington but the accuracy is excellent!

My loacl gun store has one of the new Savage's syn stock heavy barrel with that new triger, that triger is GREAT, Its in 223 cal so I have been able to resist it,(Im a reloader) But for how long I dont know. If I give in to temptation I will have him order me one in 222 (if they make it in that cal) or will go for the 22-250. I would have all ready ordered one but the wife is having a lot of Dentice bills. (I should have checked her teeth out before I married her)O will most of the time she is worth more than a few rifles.

remington 700 VSSF!! better stock, equal trigger, better action for building on.(more parts available, etc)

My vssf 220swift, off the bags this weekend had a perfect 3 shot group going in the high .1's!!! Until I tried to make it a 5 shot group and blew it out to a .3"[:(!] But that was the shooter, not the rifle.

resale is higher on the 700 action as well.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
    Got Balistics?
