Just picked up my new rifle and the barrels a mess

I just picked up my new Tikka rifle and when I got it home and unwrapped it from the plastic the barrel has some sort of residue all over it on the outside. It looks like something was spilled on it and ran down the sides of the barrel. I tried Hoppe's #9 to wipe it clean, but after putting it away and looking at it today it still looks like I have water spots or marks on the barrel. What should I use to clean it. Should I raise heck with the gunshop or with Beretta? I have never bought a gun before and brought it home and had "stuff" all over the barrel that I have to clean off. I pretty ticked at spending $530.00 on a new gun and having it look like this, but now I need to clean it and dont know how. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

    It's likely some form of cosmoline. Clean it with mineral spirits.

    I just got back from the gunn shop and he said the same thing, that it is probably some kind of cosmoline. I would have thought someone would have cleaned it prior to selling it to me though!

    I just cleaned it with flitz, a cleaner they gave me at the shop to use and still after 20 minutes my cleaning patches are turning brown!! I'm afraid I'm going to damage the blueing. Obviously something is still coming off the barrel if the patches are turning brown! It does look much better now, but since patches still not clean should I keep wiping?

    All it takes is a petroleum solvent. Kerosene, diesel fuel, mineral spirts, etc. HE-double toothpicks, hot soapy water will cut it.
    STOP with the abrasives. Geeze Louese you want to have to reblue it before it's first birthday?
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    toluene works if you can get, it takes off most any kind on petroleum based product.

    I got the mineral spirits today. So I'll wipe it down good with that, but then what. Do you then wipe off the mineral spirits with something or just put a light coat of lube oil over it. I'm not trying to sound dumb, but i've never had to do this before and I don't want to ruin the new gun!

    I personally would not do anything further, Dan.
    Take it back to the dealer and ask him to clean the rifle.
    He should be more than willing to do so. 101

    I'd have to agree with the last post. There is no way you should have to go through this with a brand new rifle from Tikka. I bought one last year and it came with no residue, marks, oil, or whatever. It's a great rifle and worth the money but something has gone wrong here. I'd start by taking it back to where you bought it.

    Yeah, Clean with the MS, called varsol up here, and then do a regular cleaning and oiling.

    Well I called beretta and the guy there told me to clean with mineral spirits like some of you had said. I cleaned it and oiled it and it is cleaned but definately looks like the blueing is of poor quality. It is different shades and splotchy. One of the reasons I bought a tikka over a savage was because of the "fit and finish" of the tikka. I will be taking the gun back tomorrow to the dealer and tell him I want it replaced. The dealer told me he would re-blue it for free, but I'm not paying $5oo+ dollars for a new gun only to have it re-blued before a shot is fired. Time to see how Beretta/Tikka customer support is!!!!
