    parkersherry;
    You have what sounds like a Remington model 11.
    They were built on Brownings patent for the A-5. While very simular to the A-5 there are some mechanical differences. They were offered in 12,16 and 20 gauge, They are good old shotguns and in good to excellent condition are becoming more and more sought after. They, like thier Browning cousins,are a bit heavy to pack afield,but I hunt with them from time to time. If memoery serves, the Sportsman was axailable in the same reciever stye as well. They were stamped "Sportsman" on the bolt.

    The gun was made in 1914 if that is the right serial number. There were 12,821 model 11s made that year in 12 ga. The total model 11 production in 12 ga. was 510,653 plus there were 102,467 Sportsman ( 3 shot version) in 12 ga. The 12 ga. was made from 1905 through 1947. You did not give much of a description. To make sure we are talking about the right gun this is the hump back Browning auto 5 look alike auto isn't it?

    John Browning was a gun designer for old man Winchester when he came to the conclusion that recoil could be put to work to operate the action of the firearms. He took a working prototype of a shotgun and a rifle to Wincheser to demonstrate his idea. Winchester did not believe that the public would buy these guns. At this point Winchester and Browning had a falling out of sorts and Browning took his idea and sold them to Remington Arms and the Stevens Arms companies.
    True story, read it in a book about Browning firearms.
    John Bowning is also the designer of the venerable 1911 Colt Automatic Pistol.
