10-22 target
I am looking to buy a ruger 10-22 target gun.
What is a hammer forged barrel and are they better?
also should i get stainless or blued.
thank you.

I'm going by what a gunsmith told me about the Ruger
Hammer Forged "twist barrel"... Ruger actually saved money
by leaving these barrels with the twist pattern as they took
a cylinder of steel- heat it and run it through a pneumatic hammer
while it is turned by a lathe. Many other companies do this but afterward lathe the barrel down smooth(thus saving Ruger time and money).
Now, this is not hearsay, the hammer forged "twist" barrels look
awesome! These barrels are capable of the same accuracy as most of the aftermarket bull barrels. The trigger group is not much better than a standard 10/22 carbine so you may wind up getting a trigger job anyway. The stock is more comfortable than a standard carbine but lacks compared to many of the aftermarket ones.
All in all, a 10/22 Target is a great gun with superb accuracy but if you're a tinkerer you could take a standard carbine and personalize it to your exact liking over time(or all at once) for not much more than $50-100 over the cost of a Target model and wind up with a tack driver!
And lastly, the debate over stainless and blued...
traditional blue is beautiful!
Stainless doesn't develope muzzle wear(blueing fade) and is easier to clean/ doesn't require constant oiling.
It all boils down to your specific liking!0
