For Drobs, Magazine Disconnect?

I thank you and the others for your replies to my Bersa question. It was a big help. You and several others have mentioned magazine disconnects. I seem to be drawing a blank on this (maybe because I don't know anything) as far was what a magazine disconnect is and how it works. If you don't mind, could you explain it for me? Thanks.

  Basically, when you have a loaded chamber, hammer cocked or decocked, if you take the magazine out and pull the trigger the gun will not fire. I happen to know that Smith & Wesson autos & Browning Hipowers have this feature. Most people I know, that own these guns, have this feature disabled. I've heard (this is rumor) that in the Brownings the disconect adds to the horrible trigger pull.
  
  My major problem with this for a defensive gun is: It doesn't allow you to cover your target while tactically reloading.
  
  It won't let you fire the gun if you are in the middle of a mag change. In a gunfight this could be very deadly to you. Say you eject your current mag & some how loose your fresh mag. At least with most guns you still have the round in the chamber. With this one you don't. Or say you loose all your mags but still have loose ammo. As horrible it is for the gun you can still load rounds directly into the chamber & fire them.
  
  Now I could see a couple possible benefits to this system for a cop. If your gun was taken from you and you get in a fight for it all you would have to do is somehow hit the mag release -- thus disabling the gun.
  
  As we all know, most but not all policemen don't know **** about guns. Firearms carried by Chicago police officers must be DBL action only & must be able to be disassembled with out pulling the trigger. Seems they found too many cops forgetting to check the chamber before trying to disassemble. I imagine the hammer disconnect safety might prevent a few mishaps for the simply moronic. Also no more shotguns in Chicago PD squad cars. Too many holes in car roofs.

  I bought a used Hi-Power a while ago and was impressed by its smooth trigger pull. It wasn't until later that I realized the magazine safety was removed. Since I have no tactical reason to remove the magazine safety (I don't carry it) and I wanted to keep the gun original, I had the safety reinstalled. VOILA! The familiar (to me anyway) "gritty" Hi-Power trigger pull was back!
