Sig P232 Advisment Needed
Heya All,
Here is the situation: my sister is getting a gun for home defense and possible future concealed carry. As of right now we have narrowed down the field to the Sig P232 with a couple other less serious competitors.
I need anyone with firsthand experience with the Sig P232 to please tell me about their expierience. Does the pistol have any quirks, how reliable is it, how accurate is it, how much matinence/upkeep is needed to keep it running, does it feed some ammo types better than others, how is Sig costumer service, ect...
My sister likes this pistol and I've always heard great things about Sig, but I'd like to be sure before any cash is laid out.

The SIG P232 is extremely reliable, and more accurate than you can hold it. The ones I have seen will feed high performance hollow point bullets with no difficulty, and had no trouble hitting the 10 ring at 25 yards, which is way beyond the purpose of this pistol. If you keep it reasonably clean and lubed it will serve admirably.
Quirks? It is a straight blowback operated gun, and because it is, the recoil is surprisingly sharp. Not punishing, just sharper than you might expect. By contrast, my Colt Pony Pocketlite in .380 is smaller and lighter, but has a locked breech action, and recoils less than the P232.
It is quick and easy to take down for cleaning. Customer service is about average, but if you run into serious trouble with it, the factory will fix it and return it quickly.

Like all SIG (SIG is an acronym so all letters should be upper case) products, the quality is very high. However, as nunn states, being blowback, the recoil is heavier than one would expect. Has your sister actually shot one? Has she compared it to a locked-breech 9x19 of similar size?
To me, the P232 is too big and heavy and magazine-capacity-limited compared to other pistols available. The P232 is as big and heavy as many compact 9x19 pistols, all of which have locked breeches and recoil no more and in most cases less, and have a great deal more power.
In a pistol no bigger (actually smaller) than the P232, my choice would be a Kel-Tec P11. It holds 11 rounds of 9x19, is locked breech and is smaller and lighter than the P232. The fact that is costs about half or less is merely a plus. I choose the P11 over any other pistol in its size and power category, regardless of price.
If one wants to drop down in power to a .380, one at least ought to get a much smaller and lighter gun in the process. The Colt Pony Pocketlite is my choice at that size and power level. As soon as the .380 Kel-Tec 3AT gets on the market, it will most likely displace the Pony on my list because it will be even smaller and lighter than the Pony, yet still has a locked breech.
To me, the P232 is the answer to a question no one asked.0 -
I can't agree more with what has already been said
about the SIG being possibly the finest built .380 out there
as I have had a blued P-230 and a stainless P-232.
Nunn has a good point about the sharp recoil for such
a a light cal. and JudgeColt's comment about weight to mag
capacity really reminds me why I traded my P-232 for a KAHR
9mm. I hope your sister has an opportunity to handle and fire
several of the guns on your consideration list as that should be
an important decision factor.0 -

I just bought a stainless 232 and got to shoot it last night/// BEAUTIFUL gun. no jamps or misfires in almost 150 rounds. Fed everything and was DEADLY accurate. I love it and HIGHLY recommend it.

I have owned and enjoyed a SIG P232, and recently acquired a new P232SL for my wife due to my extreme satisfaction. You should know that the first trigger pull without the hammer cocked is very long and, in a panic, virtually guarantees a missed shot with an inexperienced shooter. Ownership requires thorough familiarization to overcome this problem. Also, disassembly involves two small springs and a small free-floating piece of the ejection mechanism that prone to both sudden loss and confusion during reassembly. Attention to detail and practice solve this problem too.
You will be extremely satisfied with performance, reliability, accuracy, and simple satisfaction with the shooting characteristics of the sig P232. I would strongly suggest the P232SL for the benefits of a stainless pistol0 -
