Any thoughts about the Spanish CETME? Thinking of purchasing one.

  LOOKING TO GET ONE OF THESE RIFLES FROM S.O.G. PRICE SEEMS FAIR. DID ANYONE GET ONE FROM THEM RECENTLY? PRICE IS NO WHERE NEAR THE REAL THING, BUT IS IT WORTH IT @ ~$370.00? THANKS AGAIN IN ADVANCE, GD.

  After World War II, German weapon designers that escaped to Spain produced a new class of assault rifle called the CETME rifle. The first model CETME was created in 1949. The CETME rifle was adopted by the post-war West German military in 1957 and called the Gewehr 3 (G3). The G3 has since been replaced in Germany with the HK G36 rifle.
  
  The Heckler and Koch took over production of the CETME rifle with the G3 model. The G3 model has been adopted by at least 48 countries. The G3 is licensed for production in at least 13 other countries.
  
  The G3 model using the West German 7.62 mm round has been found to cause greater incapacitation than the standard NATO 7.62 round due to higher ballistic fractures.
  
  The G3 design system has been since used in 5.56 rifles.

  Hello Roger. There are Three CETME rifles to consider here. The first was the standard Spanish service rifle and this was designed to fire a slightly down loaded 7.62 NATO round. The NATO spec ammunition could be used in the standard CETME rifle but it would cause accelerated wear. The procedure during joint NATO manuvers was to exchange bolt heads on the rifle and then full power NATO round could be used safely. The actual Spanish made CETME sporters imported prior to the 1989 Bush ban were all designed to use standard 7.62 NATO spec ammunition without concern- mine never missed a beat and I fired only surplus NATO spec ammunition. The current CETME clones- parts kits built on a US made reverse engineered receivers- SHOULD be set up to fire standard NATO spec ammunition when they are slapped together. Of course they should have have their cocking tubes aligned and you should be able to take them apart without a hammer- just a few trouble areas I've heard about.

  Thank you for the prompt and erudite reply. The gun I have does show one of the difficulties you mention. Need a hammer to knock off the buttstock. But I am relieved to learn that std NATO ammo is useable.
